Microsoft Censoring the Search Term "Sex"

Anonymous Coward writes | more than 5 years ago

Censorship 4

An anonymous reader writes "One more reason not to use the new Microsoft search engine bing — apparently Microsoft is censoring search results for bing in India and other countries. If you try to search for the term "sex," along with lots of variations, from India using Microsoft's new search engine, an error message is returned that says, "the search sex may return sexually explicit content. To get results, change your search terms." There's no preference setting or toggle on or off choice, you simply cannot search for the term "sex" in India if you are using bing. While a user still can change their country and try the non-Indian version of bing, this seems like an unnecessary step and unnecessary censorship on the part of Microsoft. Apparently Google has no problem with Indians searching for the term "sex.""

It's against the law in India:

"This is a violation of the law, as search engines are providing access to information that leads to female infanticide," said Sabu Mathew George, an activist campaigning for tighter regulation of information available on the Internet on sex selection. []

Should they know? (1)

Hey, we can't have Indians knowing about sex!

Wait. How many of them are there again?

Lord help them if they are trying to (1)

suppress it.

How about if its determining the sex of a tiger, without getting ripped to shreds.

How about if its determining the sex of chicken embrios (with lights shining through the shell [its true I swear.])

How about if its determining the best way to separate Siamese Fighting fish. (Put two males in the same tank and you soon have one dead fish and one battered survivor.)

I call bullshit on this post.

Specially with Indian sites like this: []
