OLED Breakthrough Yields 75% More Efficient Lights

Mike writes "Researchers at Korea's Advanced Institute of Science and Technology recently announced a breakthrough in OLED technology that reduces the ultra-thin lights' energy consumption by 75%. The discovery hinges upon a new method of creating "surface plasmon enhanced" organic light emitting diodes that boast 1.75 times increased emission rates and double the light intensity. With OLED's popping up everywhere from keyboards to cell phones, tv screens, and lamps, the development marks an exciting step towards an entire spectrum of more energy efficient electronics."

I always thought OLEDs don't last as long as regular LEDs or LCDs. 14,000 hours vs 60,000? [] so probably not worth using even for any sort of solid-state lighting.

The bad news is this (and every other new technology that lasts for more than 50 hours) will be permanently glued and soldered to the PCB of the next iPhone and accelerate the trend towards increasingly disposable consumer electronics. I realise if you pay through the nose it is and will always still be possible to get high-quality stuff but that does nothing to decrease the amount of e-waste around the place

Despite the razor blade industry which makes a fortune from blades running blunt quickly, it would seem the display industry is better in this respect. For instance, LCD only dies because of the backlight (which is replaceable), and it would indeed seem that OLED researchers are falling over themselves to get longer lasting blue OLED materials.

Also bear in mind that OLED TV is made from red, green, and blue, so the colours will fade on blue quicker than the others. People don't want to see inferior colour ouput, so that encourages OLED researchers to up the blue length to make all three last a good while.
