AT&T Censors 4chan server

Anonymous Coward writes | more than 4 years ago

Censorship 13

An anonymous reader writes "http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/94pf2/att_is_now_blocking_all_access_to_img4chanorg/ Details how img.4chan.org (home of the notorious /b/ — "Random" image board) is being actively blocked by AT&T. According to the scant details available on 4chan and Reddit there are reports that img.4chan.org has become inaccessible from California to Texas and some reports claim as far east as Connecticut. Supposedly this is to stop a ring of pedophiles, but as one Reddit poster said it best "First the came for the pedophiles and I was not a pedophile..."
Disturbing news indeed."

4chan doesn't really have child pornography. (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#28831399)

Posting child pornography on 4chan would get a user permanently banned.

we're all 18+ and no one was forced to anything

And so it begins... (2, Insightful)

Well, we all knew this kind of garbage was going to start sooner or later right? It is COMPLETELY up to the end consumer to fight this, don't fight it simply because it's /b/ but because of the violation of PRINCIPLE this action on AT&T's action represents. Then again...why am I even remotely surprised at this kind of behavior coming from a company that helped to spy on millions of Americans...illegally. Dear god, America...SEND A MESSAGE. I never thought I would ever say this...but LEAVE AT&T and go to Verizon, if not only to make a point / stand on this issue. The action or non action of their customer base on this will set a precedent.

Some reports (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#28832401)

have stated that AT&T have blocked it because of the high number of DDOS attacks to 4chan being routed through their servers. If it is in fact this, and not alleged pornography, then this raises yet more significant issues regarding net neutrality.

Posting anon in the spirit of /b/.

yup, from a comment on techcruch

'âoeUpdated info: Sporadic reports of former BellSouth Customers being blocked are coming in. The majority of forner BellSouth customers are currently NOT BLOCKED. The majority of former SBC Global Customers are. Tier 2 support (the non Indian guys) have confirmed that there is a block, have refused to comment further, other than the fact that they decided to contact NetAsset (4chanâ(TM)s hosting company) regarding it. Current rumormill is that it ISNâ(TM)T CP AT&T DSL customers have viruses that DDoS 4chan, using a TON of bandwidth. Bandwidth costs money for AT&T too. '

routing (1)

TheSHAD0W (258774) | more than 4 years ago | (#28832545)

This could be just a routing error. I hope a war doesn't get kicked off over a routing problem.

Re:routing (1)

epee1221 (873140) | more than 4 years ago | (#28832683)

From what it sounds like, only particular boards are being blocked. I don't know much about how 4chan is organized/operated, but that makes a routing error sound unlikely to be the cause.

Re:routing (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 4 years ago | (#28832979)

4chan's on several servers; it's img.4chan.org, which hosts /b/ and /r9k/, that's "blocked"

until i hear it from an official, reliable source (moot has been wrong before, and i wouldn't trust /g/ to tell me the time of day), i'm going with the routing error

GAMEPLAN (2, Informative)

zerocool^ (112121) | more than 4 years ago | (#28833091)

...Ripped shamelessly from encyclopediadramatica.

Listen up, Anon, this is serious business. We don't want to go all LOL LEGION FREE BOXES TILE SAMPLES PIZZA on them. That won't solve shit. It'll probably justify it. We need to approach this with legitimate means. Flood the callcenters and inboxes of AT&T. Make them confirm that img.4chan.org (make sure its img.4chan.org and not just 4chan.org) is down. Then make the honest threat of service cancellation if this censorship isn't undone. We also should contact the FCC, (Or whichever federal body is the people to contact about this kind of censorship.)

1. DON'T FUCK WITH THE LAW- We want to first make use of the rights we have, censorship is violating our rights.

2. Complain to AT&T(numbers below)- Let them know how big of a deal your /b/ is to you.

3. Contact the National Coalition Against Censorship http://www.ncac.org/ [ncac.org] -These people can fight with us, send them an email at ncac@ncac.org, make it quick and to the point, a flood of emails will tip them off to the problem. They can research this on their own. The ACLU may also be a good source (god i hate to say that) http://www.aclu.org/index.html [aclu.org]

3.1 - Use http://www.cnn.com/feedback/tips/newstips.html [cnn.com] or other means to self-report this news to major networks, newspapers, and people around the world.

4. Digg to raise awareness http://digg.com/tech_news/AT_T_blocks_4chan/ [digg.com] - Continue to boost hits on other new sites, comment on articles, rate them high, anything to boost popularity.

5. Contact owners of individual websites who will be sympathetic to our cause. This has already been done with xkcd, I imagine many other webcomic owners will get on board. Try to get them to block AT$T. Try to get them to let 'their' consumers know what AT&T is doing, so that the anger goes towards AT$T. Hence: Shitstorm

6. ???

The objective of this little operation is to basically make sure that this precedent is not set. Make it absolutely abundantly clear that this is NOT acceptable to American consumers and this WILL NOT be allowed to happen, or else face financial and political suicide. Acting like an idiot and trying to DDoS them will only end with you being persecuted (and/or prosecuted), and your actions being used as a justification.

Fight with what works: this is David and Goliath. this is the little man and the big evil corporation. this is the honest consumers fighting back by being consumers: by stop giving them money, by making them look horrible, by causing a PR shitstorm. By having the consumerist press have headlines disparaging AT&T.

One idea for fighting back here: http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/94pf2/att_is_now_blocking_all_access_to_img4chanorg/c0bf7y6 [reddit.com]

The idea is basically to give them a taste of their own medicine.

List of sites that have joined in spreading the word and banning AT&T visitors:

http://xkcd.com/ [xkcd.com]

http://chan4chan.com/ [chan4chan.com]

This list needs a lot moar sites, so come and join forces. Non-webmasters: visit sites that support the cause!

instead, how about we wait a bit and confirm that this isn't just a technical fuckup first, chicken little?
