Is Genius I.Q. Linked to Psychosis?

destinyland (578448) writes | more than 4 years ago

Medicine 2

destinyland writes "New research suggests a genetic mutation linked to psychosis (and schizophrenia) could also be related to genius IQs. This supports the pscyhological theory that genius "blends intelligence with just the right amount of psychoticism" (which creates unconventional thinking). Evolution may even have favored schizophrenia and bipolar syndrome because the same gene also boosts creativity. But one geneticist still believes exactly the opposite. "Madness is often madness — and doesn't have as much genetic association with intelligence.""

Perhaps... (1)

But it also seems that there is something extra, maybe another physical and/or genetic factor that allows some people to channel their "out there-ness" into "intelligence" while, landing others in "special care". I've always thought, just through my own subjective observations at least, that common sense and intelligence are inversely proportional (loosely...). Look at people like Einstein, Dirac, Fermi, or even Donald Knuth to some extent, or some of the other great minds of the past century. Just their physical appearance would lead one to think that something was different about these individuals, yet they managed to contribute significantly to scientific progress instead of ending up in a loony bin.

Agreed. This is a nice anecdote to the argument of Nature versus Nurture.
