An anonymous reader writes "A risk assessment paper prepared for Public Works and Government Services Canada says Open Office alone would save the Canadian taxpayer 18 million a year in licensing fees.

Also Ottawa researcher Ken Rubin has found that Canada spends around 90 million every five years on proprietary software using documents obtained through Access to Information.

This story has appeared widely in the Canadian online and print media."
