IOC orders blogger to take down video

Anonymous Coward writes | more than 4 years ago

Censorship 3

An anonymous reader writes "The International Olympic Committee has ordered a blogger to remove a video showing the death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili from his website. The IOC asserts that it owns all the rights to all images taken at the games, and only licensed broadcasters can use them. However, Pate points to a Canadian law that allows copyrighted images to be used in news worthy cases."

Or better yet, the pages with the video in question: [] Dave Letterman takes on IOC over luge "accident" [] Anger is mounting against IOC in death of luger

Both pages cite the law under which they're allowed to show the clip:

The video clip is copyright by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It was broadcast by ABC News, along with other broadcast media, both on broadcast TV, cable and on their internet site. NJN Network makes no claim of copyright but it does claim the right to embed and thereby rebroadcast the video used under the Canadian Copyright Act under permission of Section 29.2 " Fair dealing for the purpose of news reporting does not infringe copyright if the following are mentioned: (a) the source; and (b) if given in the source, the name of the...(iv) broadcaster, in the case of a communication signal."

Why do they even care (1)

Do they really think it is at all difficult to find the video online.....what an incompetent group the IOC has become.
