Personally I agree that too much emphasis is placed on competitive multiplayer, I play online but only with my brother in games that allow co-operative modes so things like Rainbow Six Vegas/Vegas 2 and ARMA2. If we play Sins of a solar empire we would team up against computer players.
For Consoles I like the older games like Baldurs Gate and Dungeond and dragons heroes (there was a nother one but can't for the life of me remember what it is called) but Me and the missus would play these for hours co-operatively (or not if she kept stealing all the gold
