FBI Prioritizes Copyright Over Missing Persons

Anonymous Coward writes | more than 4 years ago

An anonymous reader writes "The FBI has limited resources, so it needs to prioritize what it works on. However, it's difficult to see why dealing with copyright infringement seems to get more attention than identity theft or missing persons. In the past year, the FBI has announced a special new task force to fight intellectual property infringement, but recent reports have shown that both identity theft and missing persons have been downgraded as priorities by the FBI, to the point that there are a backlog of such cases."

You can't instill fear in a populace by actually helping them. But if you bow to your corporate overlords, then not only do you get to terrorize the population, you get to lay the groundwork for future infringements on their rights.

There is a difference between creating a small unit to coordinate IP enforcement and the manning requirements for forensic DNA testing on a national scale.

There are also important jurisdictional distinctions between state and federal governments. The search for missing persons is primarily a local responsibility. Economic and property crimes that cross state and international borders a federal responsibility.
