Facebook Acquires Feature Phone App Maker Snaptu

Krystalo (1580077) writes | more than 3 years ago

Facebook 4

Krystalo (1580077) writes "Facebook has agreed to acquire Snaptu, an Israeli startup that makes Java-based feature phone apps, for an estimated $70 million. The acquisition, for which neither company would reveal financial details, is expected to close within a few weeks.

Earlier this year, Facebook worked with the mobile development firm to build a feature phone app that is accessible free of data charges in various overseas markets. The company says the Facebook for Feature Phones app currently works on more than 2,500 devices."

"Feature"? (1)

What does the word "Feature" or term "feature phone apps" mean here?

What does "smart" mean? (but in short - they make j2me apps for phones which run them... that would be "vast majority of mobile phones"; and also used by majority of mobile FB users, IIRC one post on FB blog)

I'm familiar with j2me apps, and their availability on phones in general and symbian phones specifically.
My question was, is "Feature" a platform (like "Android" or "iOS"), or a marketing name, or just an adjective (like "triple-A" or "mobile")?

Well, seems to be somewhere between "dumb" and "smartphone"...phones which have some features, man! (nvm how even S40 (and especially SE A200, with full multitasking) is more "smart" than iPhone for the first year. Nvm such "feature phones" as Samsung Corby or LG Cookie)

Hey, don't look at me, it's whatever marketroids and vocal pundits in few visible (and atypical) places want it to mean.
