Foxconn to Hire 1 Million Robots

hackingbear (988354) writes | about 3 years ago

China 1

hackingbear (988354) writes "Xinhua News Agency reports that Taiwanese technology giant Foxconn will replace some of its workers with 1 million robots in three years to cut rising labor expenses and improve efficiency, said Terry Gou, founder and chairman of the company, late Friday. The robots will be used to do simple and routine work such as spraying, welding and assembling which are now mainly conducted by workers. Foxconn, the world's largest maker of computer components which assembles products for Apple, Sony and Nokia, employing 1 million (human) laborers in mainland China, is in the spotlight after a string of suicides of workers at its massive Chinese plants, which some blamed on tough working conditions. As labor regulation tighten up in China, human laborers demanding wage rise become replaceable."

I wonder... (1)

if having robot workers will affect the manufacture products' quality or price? if China will continue to stay strong as a manufacturing economy? are the robots also made in china? if these workers will be able to find new jobs. Sucks they have to be booted even though the company is trying to prevent more deaths. Guess there's no easy way out of a sticky situation.
