1st Amendment is Gone: Bill makes protest illegal

schwit1 (797399) writes | more than 2 years ago

Government 5

schwit1 (797399) writes "Just when you thought the government couldn’t ruin the First Amendment any further: The House of Representatives approved a bill on Monday that outlaws protests in instances where some government officials are nearby, whether or not you even know it.

The new legislation allows prosecutors to charge anyone who enters a building without permission or with the intent to disrupt a government function with a federal offense if Secret Service is on the scene, but the law stretches to include not just the president’s palatial Pennsylvania Avenue home. Under the law, any building or grounds where the president is visiting — even temporarily — is covered, as is any building or grounds “restricted in conjunction with an event designated as a special event of national significance.""

Surprised? (1)

Robert Bowles (2733) | more than 2 years ago | (#39218219)

For decades, Republicans and Democrats have been voting to gradually erode "other peoples' freedoms". Freedoms that "nobody really needs", minor yet reasonable restrictions for the greater good, compromise lauded as a virtue as we're asked to give up just a little more, ...

That is the sound of inevitability, the only logical outcome given the inputs to the system. It's too late to unspill the milk. That anyone is surprised utterly stuns me. The writing on the wall was written by our own hands.

LONG LIVE THE KING !!! (1)

Just as the Americans pride themselves of being a republic, now comes this law which effective makes their presidents the "KING"

To hell with the Bill of Rights

To hell with the Constitution

To hell with the wishes of the founding fathers

As long as there is a "KING", to hell with everything else

Seems like only the old-timers care (1)

I took one more look at this and hey, why are we the only ones posting here?

Where are the 5-digiters, the 6-digiters, and the 7-digiters?

Looks like they care more about their new iPads than the Rights that they have lost

My number is huge. I care.

Also, to follow up a previous statement, I'm not sure that it's a king that they're looking for, as much as a corporate oligarchy. I know, I know, it's entirely too fashionable to blame our social ills on big business and what-not. But, seriously. What's the best way to impact our elected officials? Is it through actual protest? Is it through letter writing? Nope. It's through protesting the businesses that fund their campaign war chests. If that doesn't say that the system is broken, then I don't know what does. RANT COMPLETE

Yes, this bill is alarming. Yes, we have given the government our rights steadily since 2011, because otherwise THE TERRORISTS WIN. But, I firmly believe that there is a line. After a certain point, the powers that be will overstep their bounds, and the people will snap. It might be a crime for me to trespass onto the White House grounds, but what happens when they have to arrest 1,000 people at a protest outside of the capital building? Is the crime still as serious when there are thousands of others charged with it at the exact same time?

Maybe they voted for it to be a "normal" versus "preview" article and are waiting to post comments once it reaches "normal" status. That way their comments are lost.
