RIAA Claims Losses In Excess Of World's Wealth

bonch (38532) writes "Prior to setting with Limewire earlier this month, the RIAA had pressed for a $72 trillion verdict, greater than the $60 trillion of combined wealth on Earth. The RIAA arrived at the figure by multiplying $150,000 for each download of 11,000 songs, a figure federal Judge Kimba Wood called "absurd". No word on how much of the money would have gone back to the artists."

150000*11000 = $1.65 billion != $72 trillion

Multiply by 43,636 downloads per song.

ROFL... it's mind boggling that they seriously asked for that! I can just see the RIAA lawyer, his pinky to his mouth, eyes glazed in a frozen ecstacy of greed, totally oblivious to the judge's retort and subsequent contemptuous laughter. Big balls makes for low intelligence?

OTOH, it's equally mind boggling that they can repeatedly shoot themselves in the foot, showing off the patent absurdity of the law and its statutory penalty (and even getting judges to admit it repeatedly)... yet nobody notices.

I notice, though it normally seems to be around this time of morning - while trying to keep my coffee in my mouth, not spraying out over my keyboard and screen. I really do want to bless those idiots sometimes for the laughter they bring me. Of course that feeling is normally followed by trying to think of new and inventive wayts to release my frustration with them.

I think that they understand part of that number is a penalty. That does not mean they do not believe there actual losses for every instance of infringement, probably closer to the $1.4 billion number that was also mentioned in the settlement article.
