Rob Pike on the Origin of Dot Files

Unix 1

Nerdfest (867930) writes "From Rob Pike's Google+ post: I'm pretty sure the concept of a hidden file was an unintended consequence. It was certainly a mistake.

How many bugs and wasted CPU cycles and instances of human frustration (not to mention bad design) have resulted from that one small shortcut about 40 years ago?

Keep that in mind next time you want to cut a corner in your code."

Too many "features" (1)

jep305 (1288822) | more than 2 years ago | (#40876821)

Sure does suck to have all these "features".

I remember when all a computer did was sit there with a blinking cursor, and we considered ourselves lucky to have that. Nowadays, everyone's got to have his fancy-shmancy "keyboard" and "mouse", and the ability to hide files. I say if they're worth having, they're worth putting out there where everyone can see them! Why would you ever want to hide them???
