DARPA Creates first 0.85 THz Solid State Receiver

hypnosec (2231454) writes "DARPA, under its THz Electronics program, has designed a solid state receiver capable of THz (terahertz) frequencies thus inching towards the possibilities of transistor-based electronics that will operate at THz frequencies. The newly designed solid state receiver demonstrates a gain of 0.85 THz. This particular milestone is a stepping stone for the next target of 1.03 THz. Because of this achievement a host of DoD electronics capabilities can now be realized. One such application where this can be of use is for a sensor that will operate through clouds under a DARPA program, dubbed, VISAR."

Gain AT 0.85 THz, not gain OF.... (1)

a newsworthy achievement, but paritynews got it wrong, and the submitter copied it wrong.

Gain is not expressed in Hertz, so there is never any "gain" of any frequency. "The newly designed solid state receiver demonstrates a gain of 0.85 THz" is actually a gain AT 0.85 THz, which is more meaningful. The original DARPA release got it correct.

Why is the link to the original source a link to paritynews, and not a link to DARPA ? Paritynews adds absolutely nothing to the story, but instead gets it wrong.

They probably meant a Gain Bandwidth Product of 0.85 THz. That means that the product of your gain and your frequency is 0.85THz. "Of" is correct usage, because gain is unitless. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gain%E2%80%93bandwidth_product [wikipedia.org]
