Ask Slashdot: How can the tech savy individual secure his/her home?

Security 3

tezbobobo writes "After having my car broken into for the third time this year, and with the police not even attending, what steps can I take? With an infinite budget this would be easy, but noone has that. I've already installed security lights, but what else can the tech savvy individual do?"

It's extremely difficult - if not illegal - to beat an analog dog. Probably the best security available. Cameras are helpful, and discouraging to fiends if visible. Motion-sensing lights are almost mandatory with or without a dog. A motion-sensing notification (auditory) device can be helpful too - something with a gentle beep. If your intuition is sharp and you can forecast the event, a sixpack, pellet-rifle (or paintball) and camera can be divine. But the question failed to mention circumstances, environment, distance from vehicle to house, and other important details. There are different tools for different situations, and different thieves in different places.
