USAF Taps ESPN To Compile Drone "Highlight" Video

mbstone (457308) writes "The Air Force has a problem: Its drones generate thousands of hours of video (I almost said "footage.") And most of it is miles of endless desert. USAF needs to distill the highlights, if you will, and nobody does it better than ESPN, the TV sports network. Air Force officials have asked ESPN for help in analyzing the 327,384 hours collected just this year.

What we really need in times like these is sportscaster Warner Wolf. 'Let's go to the videotape, pick it up right here, Taliban in the home black.'"

Color commentary (1)

Yeah, but the really important part is who they'll hire to do the color commentary for this video snippet series. Will they ever publish a collection called When Drones Attack? Will they ever publish a collection of out-takes called When Drones Mistakenly Attack? I started out funny and hope I hit it in the first sentence, but then it sortof takes a sad turn when you think about it..

Automated computerized vs. farmed out to humans (1)

girlinatrainingbra (2738457) | about a year ago | (#42361885)

But the ESPN way would probably really require a bunch of human editors (probably interns and intern copy-editors) looking over the footage and finding the good stuff.
.
The techy nerdy way would get rid of humans being involved and come up with some interesting algorithmic way to automatically process the video streams and glean the useful bits!
