App’s creators claim that current Facebook ‘cleaners’ are misleading users.

BELFAST, Feb. 21, 2013 — Launching today is FaceSaver, an iPhone app that 'cleans' inappropriate content from a user’s Facebook timeline. The app is the only one of its kind for iPhone and is aimed at professionals and students who have concerns about the content on their profile.

The creators, System Ready from Belfast, Northern Ireland, built the app after discovering that many well-known Facebook ‘cleaners’ don't recognise hundreds of common rude and slang terms, such as "Heroin, Qu*er and Rape". "Thousands of people have put their trust in online Facebook ‘cleaners’, but in many cases they’ll have been incorrectly told that their profile is clean", commented the app’s developers.

In sample tests of common offensive terms, the FaceSaver app discovered 2-3 times more inappropriate content than other popular Facebook ‘cleaners’. The company claims that the app’s performance is a direct result of the development time; FaceSaver was developed over a 6-month period, compared to similar services that were created in just a few days.

FaceSaver scans a user’s entire timeline for inappropriate text, including wall posts, status updates and comments, back to the user’s first post. It features a unique database of over 1,000 inappropriate terms and integrates closely with Facebook’s mobile site to make deletion easy. For the average Facebook user, a scan takes less than 30 seconds. Commenting on the performance of the app, beta-tester Alan McClelland said: “I cleaned my Facebook timeline a few months ago and felt sure it was fine. When I ran the app it found 27 results that I definitely would have deleted had I found them before. I removed them all immediately using the app”. The app’s developers noted that this has been a common type of response from early testers who had made previous attempts to clean their profile manually.

Commenting on the growing number of Facebook cleaning tools, the company encouraged Facebook to monitor the space closely. "We feel users have been misplacing their trust in other cleaning services — they all missed serious, common terms in our tests and are giving their users a false sense of security. We’d encourage Facebook to watch the space carefully for services that aren’t delivering what they promise".

FaceSaver requires an iOS 4.0 device and supports English, French, German, Irish, Italian, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish. The app costs $2.99 and is available in all app regions.
