Adobe Creative Suite Going Subscription-Only

JDG1980 (2438906) writes | about a year ago

JDG1980 (2438906) writes "According to CNET and various other sources, CS6 will be the last version of Adobe's Creative Suite that will be sold in the traditional manner. All future versions will be available by subscription only, through Adobe's so-called "Creative Cloud" service. This means that before too long, anyone who wants an up-to-date version of Photoshop won't be able to buy it – they will have to pay $50 per month (minimum subscription term: one year). Can Adobe complete the switch to subscription-only, or will the backlash be too great? Will this finally spur the creation of a real competitor to Photoshop?"

Will this finally spur the creation of a real competitor to Photoshop?

No, it won't.

Any graphics shop that absolutely definitely needs what Photoshop can do (as in, literally can't do their job without things Photoshop can do that GIMP/Krita/etc can't) will just sink the cost, no questions asked. Just like how they haven't been asking questions for as many years as they've needed Photoshop.

Any of the little kids who are suddenly screwed out of a new warez version of Photoshop due to some cloud storage magic (assuming Adobe does that and cracks don't appear) most likely will either stay with CS6 indefinitely or will figure out they don't NEED Photoshop to do their cheesy photocollage meme generation, and whomever published the connect-the-dots style Photoshop tutorials the kiddies use will eventually do the same with GIMP, or Krita, or any of the existing competitors that don't cost $600/year to keep up.
