US entertainment industry to Congress: make it legal for us to deploy rootkits

Anonymous Coward writes | about a year ago

An anonymous reader writes "The hilariously named "Commission on the Theft of American Intellectual Property" has finally released its report, an 84-page tome that's pretty bonkers. But amidst all that crazy, there's a bit that stands out as particularly insane: a proposal to legalize the use of malware in order to punish people believed to be copying illegally. The report proposes that software would be loaded on computers that would somehow figure out if you were a pirate, and if you were, it would lock your computer up and take all your files hostage until you call the police and confess your crime. This is the mechanism that crooks use when they deploy ransomware."

What if most new media is encoded with a DRM and there are jail penalty to anyone that not just programs a decoder for it, but also who uses it? they control the law, have the power and abuses it, after all. And if you are behind the code, or provides a package with it, being in another country could not protect you neither, there are enough precedents. Anyway, in mac you will have it included, no choice involved. And regarding linux, you probably won't have it in your distribution, you will have to hunt for their sources or binaries in places where extra "functionality" could be added.

In the end, maybe is for the best, you won't be able to play it if your platform is not supported, you won't risk playing things from them if your platform is (is not like security software don't have false positives, would you risk using it even playing legitimate content?), and either you will have the content out of their protection schema, or you won't use their content, and they lose sales.

Use a VM (1)

Well the title says it all

install a bootleg copy of windows on a vm
if it gets locked up
reboot the iso

a VERY simple fix
