dotarray (1747900) writes "Valve continues in its quest for world domination with the announcement of Steam Music, soon to be a part of SteamOS, Big Picture and — eventually — the desktop Steam client. Promising a way for you to "Listen to your music collection while you play games", beta signups are open now."

First thought: "Oh, great, another music store. Whoop-dee-doo. Everyone else has one, figured it was just a matter of time before Steam got in on the act."

Second thought: "Hold on... 'Listen to your music collection while you play games'? Does this mean they'll be adding Steam API calls that games can use where they can natively pull from your music library in a standardized fashion to replace in-game music without cheesy workarounds or hacks? Well, if they allow any manner of local music collection to work, that may be interesting."

I can already listen to my entire music collection music while I play video games. Just turn off the background music in the game and run your favourite media player in the background. ...except you already know this isn't about an embedded music player in the game that scans/plays your existing music collection... (which would be scary in its own right for privacy reasons), this is actually gonna be all about getting you to re-buy that same album you already own for the third fucking time this time via steam just so now you can listen to it through the game. Big woop.

Just turn off the background music in the game and run your favourite media player in the background.

What part of "without cheesy workarounds or hacks" did you not understand? Try this from the angle of someone who doesn't want to keep a media player running in the background, or someone who wants the music to start/stop in response to game events instead of being the same endless whitenoise mush of a music collection they always hear under your solution.

Geez, I know Slashdot's sole purpose these days is a site-wide challenge to see who can accentuate the negative the most in any situation without committing suicide, but at least TRY to view the world from outside your uber-l33t gaming bunker you've lived in for the past twenty years for the first time in your solipsistic life.
