I was getting kind of bored with the old looking slashdot. Been using it for what ... crap, has it been 15 years? IT people should like new environments, as long as they are functional and don't remove options. I welcome the new beta, though being beta I will constructively criticise it. If it is a dead dog then I will reluctantly go back to Classic. But let's see what happens.

The Beta design is something I would have expected about 5 years ago. It's very much a design suitable for a low-res, resistive touch screen. The amount of "dead space" even at 1280x800 is silly. If I had a 16:9 screen, it would be a nightmare of scrolling.

The fact the comment system in Beta has issues is unbelievable. Slashdot has been all about the comments. Heck, I remember the firestorms around moderation and then meta moderation.

That would have been apocalyptic.

I've registered "AltSlashdot.org".

I intend to run a site much like Slashdot used to be - better articles, less decoration and less "in your face" functionality. I'm reviewing and getting comfortable with slashcode right now. I'm looking for volunteers to help with setup and running the site.

If the site becomes profitable, I intend to hire from the pool of volunteers. If you've ever wanted to participate in a site like Slashdot, here's your chance!

I'm particularly in need of people who can:

  • Set up and manage a high-traffic site (servers, load-balancers, data sites, &c)
  • Edit story submissions
  • HTML, CSS, and script creation/bugfix/repair

Go to AltSlashdot.org if interested
