Belinda Padilla does not pick up unknown calls anymore, not since someone posted her cellphone number on an online forum for gun enthusiasts. Then someone snapped pictures of the address where she has a P.O. box and put those online, too. In a crude, cartoonish scrawl, this person drew an arrow to the blurred image of a woman passing through the photo frame. “Belinda?” the person wrote. “Is that you?”

Her offense? Trying to market and sell a new .22-caliber handgun that uses a radio frequency-enabled stopwatch to identify the authorized user so no one else can fire it. Ms. Padilla and the manufacturer she works for, Armatix, intended to make the weapon the first “smart gun” for sale in the United States.

“I have no qualms with the idea of personally and professionally leveling the life of someone who has attempted to profit from disarming me and my fellow Americans,” one commenter wrote.

Their complaint? The gubmint..."

I wonder... (0)

...if people here can have a discussion this topic without it quickly falling into "Republicans want this, Democrats want that" idiocy.

Could a genuine debate on this subject really happen here?

Honestly I find the idea that guns should be allowed to be carried by anybody anywhere to be absurd and the justification for it even more so. In countries that have low numbers of guns gun crime is low and in countries that have high numbers of guns gun crime is high because this idea that everybody should have a gun so that they can shoot somebody else who has a gun if that person tries to shoot them or somebody else is just fantasy, that never happens! How many shootings were prevented because a citizen was carrying a gun and shot another citizen who was carrying a gun with the intention of shooting somebody else? Where is this well-regulated militia specified in the 2nd amendment? And among all the government corruption and spying why has this militia not stepped up to fulfill its obligation under the constitution?

Stop trying to say you need guns because that's a lie and you know it, just tell the truth: You just want guns, maybe they make you feel empowered or something but if that is the case then just say so because right now all the idiotic attempts at justification make you look like braindead, slack-jawed yokels.

if you outlaw guns, only criminals will have them. guns aren't going away anytime soon. its not the number of guns in our society that is a problem, it is our culture. your logic fails because the swedish also have a large number of weapons privately owned including full automatic rifles. yet you don't hear about rising gun violence in sweden do you? our society has become sick with no direction. take the guns away and people will just stab each other like the animals that they have become. the militia you speak of has essentially become the national guard. and you are right, we do need to take control of our country back. to be honest, a coup is likely one of the few real options right now outside of voting every single congressman out of congress and starting from scratch.

also to be fair the faux war on drugs has caused more violence than anything else. you can blame the us government and the cia for putting crack into poor communities. kind of gives weed and seed a whole new meaning.
