Knight offers $25M for online news innovation

malibucreek writes "News junkies probably know that long-time U.S. newspaper chain Knight Ridder is no more. But the Knight Foundation, established by the chain's founders, lives on. And, apparently, it's got plenty of money to spend.

The foundation has launched what it calls the 21st Century News Challenge, offering up to US$25 million over the next five years to developers with innovative ideas, prototypes and websites to improve the quality of their geographic communities. The Online Journalism Review has an interview with a Knight official who provides details on the contest.

Think you can build a better website than your local paper? Maybe now's the time to get coding!"
