A campaign to block Firefox users

rarwes (645964) writes | more than 6 years ago

The Internet 5

rarwes (645964) writes "A website is aiming at blocking Firefox users. This because a fraction of the Firefox users installed an Ad Blocker and thus stealing money from website owners that use ads. They recommend using IE, Opera or IE tab. From the site: Demographics have shown that not only are FireFox users a somewhat small percentage of the internet, they actually are even smaller in terms of online spending, therefore blocking FireFox seems to have only minimal financial drawbacks, whereas ending resource theft has tremendous financial rewards for honest, hard-working website owners and developers."

Why sites blocking firefox wont get my support (1)

Onlyodin (1137597) | more than 6 years ago | (#20258893)

Firefox is my browser of choice, I find it suits all my needs, some of which include blocking annoying ads and popups!

...and I sure as hell aint gonna use IE to buy anything online, so I don't know where they got their bogus stats from.

Small percentage? (1)

Last time I checked almost 40% of the Irish use Firefox, and almost 30% of Europe over all...
Good luck making back that money you're losing

Simply not the web (1)

bobs666 (146801) | more than 6 years ago | (#20260071)

If I cant read it with Firefox, then its is not the web, Its something else.

For an Internet to work you have to maintain interoperability.

User Agent Switcher (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 6 years ago | (#20260527)

If people are smart enough to install AdBlock, they're smart enough to install User Agent Switcher ( [] ), which will prevent the site picking them up as Firefox.

All this is going to do is keep out a lot of bloggers, journos, web developers and other people you really really want to come to your site, even if they don't click on the ads.

Heres how this nonsense started (1)

surfer2210 (1144315) | more than 6 years ago | (#20273445)

Heres how this whole nonsense about blocking Firefox started. It started with a guy who signed his post "Honest Web Master", and ranted on the Adblock Plus add-on discussion forum ( ons/comments.php?DiscussionID=3060&page=1 [] ) about how web surfers using Adblock Plus was stealing because his Google Adsense Ads werent being shown. In addition to posting on the Adblock Plus forums, he continues his rant over on the Adsense Chat forums, using the name Danny Carlton, and includes code on how to block Adblock Plus users. []
After realizing that his attempts to block the ADP users are useless, he choses to block Firefox users completely.

The bottom line of all of this is that the purpose of his site ( is to serve Google Adsense ads and generate revenue only by adsense. A clear violation of the Google Adsense TOS. py?answer=48182 [] Specifically the part that says "No Google ad may be placed on pages published specifically for the purpose of showing ads, whether or not the page content is relevant."

I recommend reporting him to Google Adsense TOS violations, just to keep everyone playing fairly.
