Stony Stevenson (954022) writes "Intel has expanded its green initiative with plans to consolidate its spread of IT centres into eight strategic locations over the next eight years. Intel is aiming to increase its use of virtualisation software to dramatically reduce the number of servers it uses, which currently stands at around 93,000. Intel hopes to complete the work by 2010, and claimed that the consolidation could result in savings of as much as $1.8bn over the next seven years.

"This initiative enables us to reduce costs, improve server and storage utilisation, create higher density and more energy-efficient data centres, and to keep pace with our rapid rate of innovation," said Brently Davis, manager of Intel's data centre efficiency initiative."
