This is actually not a terrible idea. Kinda along the lines of how people joke that the best anti-theft an American car can have is a clutch.

Proposed Rule Would Drastically Restrict Chimp Research

54mc Already not in use (134 comments)

From TFA:

In fact, most of the roughly 1,000 chimps held at biomedical laboratories are not being used.

I'd be curious why this is - already too much regulation? The article goes on to say that they hope to pass them on to shelters. I'd certainly hope that's the case if they're not being utilized

Federal Judge Says Interns Should Be Paid

54mc Re:Genius judge (540 comments)

The only point I can see is that even if they have to be paid, you still have perfectly legitimate reason to pay them less than you would someone else doing the same work.

The real problem is the racket they've got going. You can't get a job without experience and the only experience you can get is going to be unpaid or underpaid labor doing the exact same job

Ask Slashdot: What To Do When Another Dev Steals Your Work and Adds Their Name?

54mc Re:Wayback machine? (480 comments)

If the original client won't cooperate, perhaps you could send a DMCA takedown notice asserting your ownership of the copyright for the original digital content.

Unfortunately, this is almost certainly not an option. From TFS:

Now this is grey territory as it the client who owns the source, not the contracting developer.

Games Workshop Bullies Author Over Use of the Words 'Space Marine'

54mc Re:Starcraft (211 comments)

It's common rumor, though I'm unable to find a source right now, that Starcraft was originally designed to be an RTS version of Space Hulk. You've got the Marines/Marines, Zerg/Tyaranids, Protoss/Tau. Someone who's not at work might be more enterprising than I and actually be able to find a source on this.

Japan to launch Solar-Sail Spacecraft to Venus

54mc 54mc writes  |  more than 4 years ago

54mc writes "The financial times reports that Japan is preparing to launch what they hope to be the first successful solar sail craft to Venus. Dubbed Ikaros for interplanetary kite-craft accelerated by radiation of the sun, it hopes to be a forerunner for another solar sail powered vehicle to Jupiter later this decade.

I thought 2010 was supposed to be the year we made contact with Jupiter, but I can settle for 2020."

MassEffect 2 finds a way to profit from used games

54mc 54mc writes  |  more than 4 years ago

54mc writes "Mass Effect 2 has found a way to profit from those gamers who might be considering buying the game used. New copies of the game will include a code for free access to some DLC. When a player buys the game used, the old code will not work, and they will have to pay for a new one.

Finally, someone's found a way to take some wind out of the sails of Gamestop. It'll be interesting to see how the pricing on used copies of Mass Effect 2 compare with the prices of other used games, and to see if other games will follow suit."

Microsoft COFEE Leaked

54mc 54mc writes  |  more than 4 years ago

54mc writes "Crunchgear reports that Microsoft's long-searched for forensics tool, COFEE has been leaked. The tool started on a small private tracker, but has since worked it's way to The Pirate Bay. Not all those who have got ahold of it are enthused, and reviews have ranged from "disappointing" to "useless." From the article:you have absolutely no use for the program. It’s not something like Photoshop or Final Cut Pro, an expensive application that you download for the hell of it on the off-chance you need to put Dave Meltzer’s face on Brett Hart’s body as part of a message board thread. No, COFEE is 100 percent useless to you. "

top EULA Allows the Government to Own Your PC

54mc 54mc writes  |  more than 4 years ago

54mc writes "Glen Beck today revealed what a close inspection of the End User License Agreement for the CARS system contains. From the EULA, "This application provides access to the DoT CARS system. When logged on to the CARS system, your computer is considered a Federal computer system and is the property of the U.S. Government." This is of course, yet another example of EULAs that no one reads going way too far."
