DivX to be bought by Macrovision

575 575 writes  |  more than 3 years ago

575 (195442) writes "The one-time controversial company DivX (and its new owner Sonic) is slated to be purchased by Macrovision; a copy protection company with such an awful consumer reputation that it changed its name to Rovi. DivX made its reputation by enabling piracy though codec that made it feasible to share large videos over the internet, and flipping the bird to the system though endeavors like Stage6. Now that it has literally sold out to "the man", what does it mean (if anything) for the media on the internet?"

Rant away!

575 575 writes  |  more than 12 years ago

OK, so there's a slashdot journal feature that I never noticed... Interesting. I'm going to take this opportunity to rant, and give everyone else another place to tell me that I incorrectly counted the syllables of a haiku, or that I suck at making limericks, or that they won't be impressed until I start writing in some other way. And, yes, I know that my 'haiku' would be called 'senryu' by some, and that calling them haiku will piss the anal retentive off (incidentally, the anal retentive are usually already pissed off, which is why I don't care). The fact of the matter is, the term haiku is about twenty times more recognizable as what you'd call a senryu, and my job isn't the impossible task of educating the slashdot populace. My job is to make light of serious situations, make serious of light situations, and possibly provoke thought by funneling a perspective on an issue through the filter of a short poem written by a geek.
