Ask Slashdot: Mitigating DoS Attacks On Home Network?

89cents They know your IP address? (319 comments)

Most gaming services don't show other users your IP address as things like a DoS could happen. Unless they are the admins of the game or you are using a third party service that they have access to such as a Teamspeak/Ventrillo server, guild/forum web server, etc. Be careful of what you visit. Also, even the best router is not going to stop your internet pipe from getting flooded with incoming packets.

New Smartphone Tech To Alert Pedestrians: 'You Are About To Be Hit By a Car'

89cents Distracting the driver is the solution? (136 comments)

So if a person is about to step out from behind a parked car and the driver is actually paying attention to the road, send him an alert to the dashboard which makes him briefly take his eyes off the road to read a message? Seriously?

When it comes to (download) bandwidth needs, I require..

89cents Require? (279 comments)

What is this poll asking? If internet access is "required", then less than 1Mbit satisfies most web/email. Streaming video requires more. Faster speeds just make downloads quicker. If asking what we prefer, then greater than 100MB would be the answer. It seems like most people are answering with what they have.

Firefox 23 Arrives With New Logo, Mixed Content Blocker, and Network Monitor

89cents Network Monitor (365 comments)

The network monitor looks nice for troubleshooting. I'll be using that in the future. It also has a 3D button which is pretty cool, good for showing the different elements of a web page. I don't care for the sharing feature. I guess the icon only shows up if you login to Facebook, so I'll never see it.

Blizzard Reportedly Planning A Linux Game For 2013

89cents Re:Too Late (353 comments)

Agreed, but the fall of Blizzard started with the closure of Blizzard North, a few years before the Activision merger.

Blizzard Reportedly Planning A Linux Game For 2013

89cents Too Late (353 comments)

Blizzard used to by favorite gaming company. Now I loathe them. The recent huge disappointment of Diablo 3, the no LAN play in SC2, and with how I heard they seriously dumbed down WoW, Blizzard won't be getting anymore of my money.

'Connected' TVs Mostly Used Just Like the Unconnected Kind

89cents Apps suck, but works great as a media player (217 comments)

Yes, I agree the apps are useless, but my Samsung SmartTV is great for playing .mp4 and .mkv files. It will even play .mt2s files you can find on Blu-Ray disks. I just plug in a 1 TB WD Passport portable hard drive to my TV, and use this as my media center. No extra devices need to be turned on. It can also play directly from computer shares, but my wireless access of the TV to the living room is quite poor.

Bing Now Nearly As Good As Google — Says Microsoft

89cents Re:Holy self-reference! (405 comments)

Hmm tried it out. It would be perfect without all the mouseover / javascript crap. Checked out settings and I don't even see the option to disable it. I don't know why every web page has to annoy me these days by popping up menus or "over"-highlighting things by just moving the mouse over it.

The correct number of shoes to own:

89cents Re:At Least Four (502 comments)

Agree, although I would say at least two pairs for work, but shoes for mowing the lawn and for comfort could be considered the same.

Agreed. Adding in a Voodoo card and then running glquake instead of software rendered quake, was just draw dropping.

3TB Hard Drive Round Up

89cents 7200 RPM data drives (238 comments)

Instead of paying $179 for a 3TB 7200 TB drive, it makes more sense to pay $129 for a 3TB 5400 RPM drive such as this Hitachi:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145493

and then add a small SSD with the savings for the OS/apps. The new BIOS/chipsets even allow you to combine them so that the SSD is used as a large cache drive.

Apple Sues Samsung Over Galaxy Phones and Tablets

89cents Rectangular design with round corners? Seriously? (465 comments)

Looking at all of my devices (monitors, computer, keyboard, mouse, phone, etc.), everything is rectangular with rounded corners. The only variance is how much the corners are rounded and how thick it is. What nonsense.

Firefox 4 Released!

89cents 15.5 MB on Windows (554 comments)

Back then I remember hearing about this Phoenix web browser referred to as Mozilla Lite that was just a few MB and I loved it. Now I have watched as Firefox has grown, but the bloat has as well. Well at least 15 MB is still nothing these days.

J.J. Abrams Promises 'Fringe' Will Die Fighting

89cents Good show (392 comments)

Fringe is one of my favorites, like a modern day X-files and the only show that my wife will watch on TV. I was really surprised to learn that it may be canceled, especially after it just got the 2011 People's Choice Award for best Sci-fi/Fantasy show. I guess it isn't dumb downed enough like all the other shows that people want to watch which good good ratings. I am ashamed.

Why haven't you bought a tablet?

89cents Great for Kids (459 comments)

I bought an Archos 101 Android based tablet ($294 on Amazon) for my daughter. A touchscreen interface is very intuitive for a 2 year old. Before she always pointed to the Youtube related video on my computer and say "How bout this one?" and I would use the mouse and click on it. Now she can just touch the video she wants.

It's more of a toy/learning experience for me, but it is great for her to keep her occupied. I have many kid apps like drawing, connect the dots, memory game, color Mickey Mouse, etc. on it. I have all of her favorite YouTube videos downloaded to it along with some Disney movies and videos of her. She can also finger scroll through all the pictures we took of her which will keep her entertained for awhile. Great for at home, in the car or restaurants, or on a plane. It's not perfect as she is still learning the interface and accidentally presses the home button or a link in an app that starts up the web browser to rate it or to email, but generally it works out quite well especially that the battery life is about 8 hours.
