Abreu Re:Game of Thrones (209 comments)

You should watch the series, it does introduce several extra scenes of "sexposition".

Yeah, but HBO feels they'll have more rating if they show them having sex while explaining their reasons for stabbing each other in the back.

I'll take Rudolph Flash over Adolph Apple.

Whatever merit your argument might have had, it was invalidated by Godwin's law. You lose.

Lucas Says Ford, Fisher and Hamill May Return For Next Star Wars

Abreu Re:It's a trap! (253 comments)

Considering how Carrie Fisher and Mark Hammil look nowadays, the movies should be set 100 years after the Battle of Yavin!

But seriously, watching them as secondary characters and possibly mentors to a new set of young heroes would be awesome.

I'd like to see Leia as a tough-as-nails politician in Coruscant, Luke as head of a new Jedi order and Han still flying the galaxy with Chewbacca.

(yes, I am ignoring the novels and comic canon)

So this "Dominus" (whose "Annum" it is today) was who, the author of the book Higher-Order Perl?

No, that doesn't sound right... I think he's the author of The Art of Computer Programming

Among Servers, Apple's Mac Mini Quietly Gains Ground

Abreu Re:becasue Apple never (367 comments)

You realize that hosting companies actually need to care about the physical dimensions of the machines they are hosting? They don't just leave a few PC towers in the corner of a room and call it a day.

Right, which is why there are things called "rack mountable servers" that come in predictable sizes...

Nah, even if the mission fails, Musk will show graphs and logs explaining that the valves never actually malfunctioned... ...

The US Redrawn As 50 Equally Populated States

Abreu Re:What?! (642 comments)

Fine. Raise taxes.

Or, cut defense spending. You'd still have the world's best military if you slash it by 30%, I bet.

Then why is the USA the only country using indirect elections? Every other modern country that used it at some point has switched to direct elections.

The US Redrawn As 50 Equally Populated States

Abreu Re:further reason for a popular vote (642 comments)

No point visiting anywhere since you can do video conferences tailored to particular elector types, rather than regions.

Imagine a virtual town hall meeting of just nerds, or just single mothers, or just asian-americans. etc.

The US Redrawn As 50 Equally Populated States

Abreu Re:What?! (642 comments)

Of course this is a much easier solution then just switching to popular vote...

This is correct. The whole indirect voting systems like the US Electoral College were created to deal with the logistical problems of giving every citizen the vote.

In this day and age, the only purpose of indirect elections is to give undue weight to rural areas.

"Obama's Coup" the Videogame

Abreu Abreu writes  |  more than 4 years ago

Abreu (173023) writes "It is the year 2011, and the evil Barack Obama, after meeting in secret with the heads of state of Canada, Stephen Harper, and Mexico, Felipe Calderon, has put in motion his plan to dissolve the three countries and establish a North American Union.
Of course, one of the first things to do is to dissolve the constitution and the right to bear arms, which causes a revolution in America...

New HIV Vaccine shows promise

Abreu Abreu writes  |  more than 4 years ago

Abreu writes "A U.S.-funded study involving more than 16,000 volunteers in Thailand found that a combination of ALVAC, made by Paris- based Sanofi-Aventis SA, and AIDSVAX, from VaxGen Inc., of South San Francisco, cut infections by 31.2 percent in the people who received it compared with those on a placebo, scientists said today in Bangkok. Neither vaccine had stopped the virus that causes AIDS when tested separately in previous studies."

Sperm donor ordered to pay child support

Abreu (173023) writes "UPI reports:

A London firefighter who donated sperm so lesbian friends could have children said he was shocked and angered to learn they're demanding child support.

Britain's Child Support Agency says only anonymous sperm donors are exempt from child support responsibilities unless the children are legally adopted. The agency has asked Andy Bathie, 37, to pay thousands of pounds in child support for a girl and boy born to Sharon and Terri Arnold"

Battlefield robots would behave more ethically

Abreu Abreu writes  |  more than 5 years ago

Abreu writes "The New York Times prints:

In the heat of battle, their minds clouded by fear, anger or vengefulness, even the best-trained soldiers can act in ways that violate the Geneva Conventions or battlefield rules of engagement. Now some researchers suggest that robots could do better.

"My research hypothesis is that intelligent robots can behave more ethically in the battlefield than humans currently can," said Ronald C. Arkin, a computer scientist at Georgia Tech, who is designing software for battlefield robots under contract with the Army. "That's the case I make."

Now, are civilians in danger going to believe a machine that tells them "Come with me if you want to live"?"

Semen acts like an anti-depressant

Abreu Abreu writes  |  more than 5 years ago

Abreu (173023) writes "Semen makes women happy. That's the remarkable conclusion of a study comparing women whose partners wear condoms with those whose partners don't, according to this article in the New Scientist

The study, which is bound to provoke controversy, showed that the women who were directly exposed to semen were less depressed. The researchers think this is because mood-altering hormones in semen are absorbed through the vagina. They say they have ruled out other explanations."
