The Fjord-Cooled Data Center

AfroTrance Re:Queue the screams of hysteria (195 comments)

Warm water of a data center won't change the temperature of the ocean at all.

Not the whole ocean, but as I said, it could affect the local environment.

But any way, what is the other option?

Did I say they shouldn't put warm water in the ocean?

What should be done, in all circumstances, is a study on the environmental impact. Such a thing may find (for example) that the original design releases the water in a secluded shallow bay where there is little circulation. As you said, a simple fix would be to make a longer pipe and release the water in deeper water, where there are stronger currents.

Environmentalism is not about doing nothing because well everything affects the environment. It is doing the optimal thing based on scientific evidence.

The Fjord-Cooled Data Center

AfroTrance Re:Queue the screams of hysteria (195 comments)

Releasing warm water back into the ocean could disrupt the local environment. Every company should minimise impact on the environment where possible. That is the rational thing to do, not something only 'hysterical environmentalists' support.

For example, the area might be a breeding ground for fish. Should they impact the level of fish in the sea just so a data centre can reduce their power bill? It seems almost all of Norway's energy comes from hydro, so it isn't reducing greenhouse emissions.

Why Everyone Hates the IT Department

AfroTrance Re:Because they know less about their job than I d (960 comments)

This is why I hate IT support. Most people I have dealt with in IT don't really know anything about computers. They just read from a script/troubleshooter. Only once they realise it is beyond their 'expertise' will the problem get elevated to someone who actually knows what they are doing. Sometimes you will get people who know a little, but not enough, try to fix things and then cause critical services to break in the middle of the work day.

Also the company I currently work for has a very bloated IT department, even though all support and server stuff is contracted out. Even with all these people in IT, our IT infrastructure/support/service is terrible.

Correlating Psychopathy With Speech Patterns

AfroTrance Re:PR Stunt (270 comments)

Those are diagnostic criteria from the DSM IV, which is the standard diagnostic manual for psychiatrists in North America.

I see lots of quotes pulled from Wikipedia, none of which back up your original very broad, very unscientific claim.

You just can't admit you're wrong hey?

Psychopathy is an illness

That requires a citation.

Correlating Psychopathy With Speech Patterns

AfroTrance Re:PR Stunt (270 comments)

A general criteria for a mental disease is that it has a strong negative effect on your life or someone else's.

Really? That "criteria" sounds like you just came up with it. Define strong. Define negative.

And this guy I know is a real dick, does he have a mental disease? He has a "strong negative effect" on everyone he meets.

Man Charged in Model Airplane Plot To Bomb Pentagon

AfroTrance Re:Doesn't make sense.. (515 comments)

Ok. So despite what the article says, he is being charged for supplying equipment to undercover agents, and not for planning to fly a toy plane into a building.

Man Charged in Model Airplane Plot To Bomb Pentagon

AfroTrance Doesn't make sense.. (515 comments)

arrested and charged Wednesday with plotting an attack on the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol

was charged with attempting to provide material support and resources to al Qaeda for attacks on U.S. soldiers overseas

There is no information to indicate he was connected to a foreign terrorist organization.

Huh? How does the charge relate to the act?

The Dead Sea Scrolls and Information Paranoia

AfroTrance Re:LOLing at the "English" translation (585 comments)

Of course, when the King James Bible was being written, that WAS prose.

What does King James have to do with the Dead Sea Scrolls? And as someone else pointed out, people didn't speak like that 500 years ago...

Airline Pilots Allowed To Dodge Security Screening

AfroTrance Re:How is this a problem? (285 comments)

They could... but if they bypass security, one pilot could do much more damage than otherwise. They could easily bring in bombs or guns or whatever, and distribute them to other non-pilot accomplices. Then they could target multiple planes in one incident.

Ground-Based GPS Mimic Is Inch Perfect

AfroTrance Re:aka Differential GPS (140 comments)

AFAIK DGPS uses fixed nodes to broadcast error in the satellite signal, while this system used fixed nodes to act like satellites. So this system can work with zero signal from satellite.

What Happens After the Super-Hero Movie Bubble?

AfroTrance Re:Oh noes! (339 comments)

That isn't a Hollywood/studio movie, it is an independent movie that cost $400,000 to make.

Even successful directors/writers in Hollywood are having trouble getting original/unconventional movies made.

Massive Solar Tower Planned For Arizona

AfroTrance Re:The only thing taller.. (407 comments)

The idea that we would build the 2nd tallest structure in the world for 200 MW is ridiculous.

How does that make it "ridiculous"? What does it matter how tall it is compared to a skyscraper? And what does it matter how much energy it produces "per power plant"? That is the most useless measure I've ever heard. What matters is how much it costs to build and maintain, per MW.

Massive Solar Tower Planned For Arizona

AfroTrance Re:Decent idea. (407 comments)

A high pressure system is where cold air falls to the surface and heats on the way down. A low pressure system is where hot air rises and cools on the way up. This tower is creating a small-scale low pressure system.

Australian R18+ Rating For Games? Not Yet; NSW Refuses To Vote

AfroTrance Re:Don't feel bad, Australia (71 comments)

Is AO given to full on graphic sexual content? Because the R18+ rating in Australia would be mainly used for violent games, e.g. Mortal Kombat. Graphic sexual content in Australia gets a X rating.

Hacker Group LulzSec Challenges FBI

AfroTrance Re:To all those who are praising Lulz ... (308 comments)

or they'd suddenly wake up in a Chinese or Iranian prison?

How would they get to China or Iran in the first place...?

And, to the idiot who claimed that "hacking never hurt anyone", talk to the people who were put in harms way by WikiLeaks sloppy editing of stolen documents containing the names of people.

Specifically, which people are these? Provide a source that states someone was exposed and was in danger as a result.

And what are you talking about? What "hacking"? Wikileaks didn't hack anybody. Bradley Manning didn't hack anybody. Do you consider Manning copying documents from a server he had authorisation to as "hacking"? Or are you just completely uninformed and are spouting absolute bullshit?
