NASA Laying Foundation For Jupiter Moon Space Mission

Akido37 Re:Permanent Habitat? (100 comments)

Europa is too far. The Moon or Mars would be better in the short term, especially for trial and error. If something goes wrong, we're far closer and more able to do something and learn from it. A disaster on Europa would have no possibility of rescue from Earth. Long term, of course, Europa makes a lot of sense.

Some Critics Suggest Apple Boycott Over Chinese Working Conditions

Akido37 Boycott Foxconn? (744 comments)

All of these articles about Apple's supply chain seem to ignore one fact: Apple's aren't the only products made in these factories.

Want to boycott horrific working conditions? Stop buying everything. Even Made in America products have parts or raw materials from overseas sweatshops. Electricity in the United States is typically powered by coal, which routinely ignores safety regulations.

The problem isn't Apple. The problem is lax governmental regulation that allows this to happen. Want to stop Apple from using sweatshops? Want to stop Google and Facebook from tracking your every move? Make it illegal, and enforce the damned law.

Why the New Guy Can't Code

Akido37 Re:The Real Problem: Degrees Without Side-Work (948 comments)

Did you have a full-time 40hr/wk job totally outside of CS/IT during the same period that left you with only enough time outside of class to sleep?

Yeah, some of us did. I worked up to 60 hours a week while in school. College is expensive, even with financial aid.

White House Pressuring Registrars To Block Sites

Akido37 Due Process? (569 comments)

When the Obama Administration claims the right to ASSASSINATE CITIZENS without due process, I'm not surprised that a little thing like blocking websites doesn't merit due process either.

To Ballmer, Grabbing iPad's Market Is 'Job One Urgency'

Akido37 Re:I don't get it. (764 comments)

Microsoft, why don't you just write some QUALITY software for the iPad instead of trying to go head on in competition? That way, the more iPads Apple sells, the more software you sell. It's win-win.

I wonder about this sometimes. I think Microsoft needs to remember it's a software company, not a hardware company. Sell Office, sell Windows, create application software for all platforms. Otherwise you have Zune.

iPad Owners Are 'Selfish Elites'

Akido37 Wait, a study of opinion? (780 comments)

The firm's conclusion was that non-iPad owners THINK iPad owners tend to be wealthy, sophisticated, highly educated and disproportionately interested in business and finance, while they scored terribly in the areas of altruism and kindness.

Fixed. What a stupid study. How about you actually see what iPad owners are like, rather than ask people what their opinions of iPad owners are?

Disclaimer: I do not own an iPad

Google Engineer Decries Complexity of Java, C++

Akido37 Missing context... (878 comments)

Pike detailed the shortcomings of such languages as a way of describing the goals that he and other Google engineers have for a new programming language they developed, called Go.

Oh, so he's pushing a competing product and denigrating his competition? Nothing to see here, I think.

Where Will Your Next Gadget Be Made?

Akido37 Re:Bigger picture (378 comments)

Assume $100 motherboard is marked up 70%
4.49% increase in costs

What would the world be like if instead of 70% markup, we increased wages for everyone, keeping a more reasonable profit margin?

Where Will Your Next Gadget Be Made?

Akido37 They will be made in the next cheapest country (378 comments)

Anyone remember "Made in Japan"? Then "Made in Taiwan"? Now, "Made in China". Manufacturing moves to the cheapest location. This is how globalization works, for better or worse. If China becomes too expensive, somewhere else will arise to take up the slack and open near-slave labor factories.

Hopefully, this results in a rise in living conditions for everyone - My personal pessimism has doubts.

FTC Takes Out Porn- and Botnet-Spewing ISP

Akido37 Re:How is the porn part relevant? (263 comments)

You think child porn is protected by freedom of expression?

Tell me, whose freedom are you thinking should be protected? The adult or the child? Is it OK if the adult's freedoms infringe on those of the child?

You're protecting the freedom of the poor bastard who downloaded it by mistake and didn't nuke his hard drive from orbit.

Akido37 Mac OS X (467 comments)

If the problem is BIOS-related, or a legacy of DOS, or both, does this mean it will work fine on Mac OS X? All new Macs use EFI, and OS X Snow Leopard is a 64-bit OS.

Steve Jobs Publishes Some "Thoughts On Flash"

Akido37 Re:yeah well... (944 comments)

Why not support both HTML5 AND flash?

HTML5 may be the future, but Flash is still what is in use today.

That's not the way Apple works. It adopted USB when there was exactly ONE USB printer on the market. It dropped floppies while they were still in common usage. It's been pushing FireWire when nobody else is.

Apple decides when to deprecate technology on their own devices. If you don't like it, buy something else.

Steve Jobs Publishes Some "Thoughts On Flash"

Akido37 Whoosh! (944 comments)

Tacky that his first point is that Flash is proprietary, when Apple restricts the apps that can be installed on the phone. Pot, meet kettle.

That's kind of the whole point. Jobs admits that Apple has a closed system, when Adobe is claiming theirs is open. When he talks about open, he's referring to HTML5/CSS/JavaScript, which you DO NOT need to submit to the app store.

America's Biggest Rip-offs

Akido37 Akido37 writes  |  more than 4 years ago

Akido37 (1473009) writes "The top 9 biggest rip-offs according to CNN Money. I knew text messaging was a scam, but 6,500% markup? That's absolutely insane. My favorite scammy website, "free" is included as well.

Is this a failure of the free market? Everybody knows they're scams, but what can we do about it? Voting with our wallets doesn't seem to be working."

Senator Arlen Specter becomes a Democrat

Akido37 Akido37 writes  |  more than 5 years ago

Akido37 (1473009) writes "Arlen Specter today announced that he's switching parties, and becoming a Democrat. This gives Democrats 59 seats in the Senate, and possibly 60 including Al Franken in Minnesota. While this comes as a surprise to many Republicans, it is not to moderate Republican Senator Olympia Snowe (ME), who said, "you haven't certainly heard warm encouraging words of how they [Republicans] view moderates. Either you are with us or against us.""

Time Warner expanding internet caps to new markets

Akido37 Akido37 writes  |  more than 5 years ago

Akido37 (1473009) writes "Time Warner Cable is expanding its bandwidth capping program to new markets in Rochester, NY, Austin TX, San Antonio TX, and Greensboro, NC. It seems that they have been testing plans with 5, 10, 20, or 40GB of data transfer per month, with prices ranging from $30 to $55 a month.

According to Ars, Time Warner is exempting their own web services from this cap.

If you're a New York resident, you can make a complaint to the Attorney General's Office here:"
