Controversy Over Violet Blue's Harm Reduction Talk

Ardaen Re:Rape trigger? (562 comments)

Yeah, that 80% figure? I can make up numbers as well. I can even get them from resources I agree with, even if they aren't backed up by good methodology. Getting good numbers in this area is difficult, but it tends to be closer to 60% male. That doesn't mean women are doing better however. There are certain situations like sex for housing that women are more likely to get into. This does not mean they are doing better.

But yeah, you're quoting skewed numbers and arguments straight from masculinist propaganda. The bad kind of masculinist, the sort that is pretty much a mirror image of what you accuse all feminists of being. Also it's the kind of stuff a troll would dig up with a few simple Google searches. Silly me, don't feed the trolls.

Controversy Over Violet Blue's Harm Reduction Talk

Ardaen Re:Rape trigger? (562 comments)

Women as a class are not treated as well as men in our society. I'd quote some statistics, point at some examples or data but it's pervasive enough and well enough studied that I should not need to. You'd have to be wilfully ignorant or very young to be unaware of this. True, things are improving, and are far better than they were. But this does not mean things are fair.

Feminism is a collection of movements and ideologies aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, and social rights for women.

There is no central government of feminism. No group of leaders that decide global feminist policy. It's an umbrella term. As soon as you start quoting individuals to explain why feminists are all one way or another you've crossed into the realm of prejudice and bigotry. Some are intolerant yes. Some aren't. Unsurprisingly people who feel mistreated aren't always fair, they are often angry. It's funny that you claim to be against intolerance but then say you are intolerant of all people who subscribe to any ideology aimed at establishing equality for women.

You are prejudiced. At least some of these prejudices are unfair and harmful. I know this about you by one simple fact, you are human. On this issue I'd strongly suggest some introspection. Maybe after getting some sleep.

Controversy Over Violet Blue's Harm Reduction Talk

Ardaen Re:Rape trigger? (562 comments)

For the love of humanity, mod parent up. People need to be responsible for addressing their own difficulties, not force all of society to acquiesce and adopt arbitrary strictures to make sure they don't possibly ever cause somebody to remember something nasty.

Not the best way to put it, but there is some truth there.

So, all you whiny feminists, unless you are willing to be sensitive to people like this AC and ban all pseudo-military accouterments from all fashion forever etc. then you can STFU. That is of course if feminism wasn't already based on double standards run amok.

I was with you up until you started the name calling and the bigotry against feminists.

Yeah, sure, some may have double standards and some may be ridiculous. This is true of any group of people. This does not mean that all feminism is a double standard or that everything under the umbrella term feminism should be summarily dismissed. By that logic any group or cause can be ignored.

Diablo III Released

Ardaen Re:Release Failure (594 comments)

No, a queue is a fix for a manufactured problem.

Similar problem solving:
Because your friend keeps stabbing you in the leg with a sharp knife, we've hired a paramedic to follow you around.

Proper solution:
Because your friend keeps stabbing you, we arrested him. As a result you will not get stabbed by him again.

Gaming Clichés That Need To Die

Ardaen I've seen this one before! (416 comments)

So I went to the local video game store just the other day. I looked at the new releases section... Out of 20 new releases 2 (the one is arguable) are new and the other 18 are sequels, spin offs or updates of previous games...

Then I got bored and left.

Ballmer Slams Android As Cheap and Overcomplicated

Ardaen Re:The trouble is... (645 comments)

You know, someone modding you down doesn't mean they are fan boy. They could be modding you down because your not really adding anything. In fact your being about as rational and helpful as a fan boy. Any device takes some time to learn, especially if you are coming from another platform. If you take a long time user of any major platform and move them to a different one they will have problems initially. That isn't a good way to judge it.

My personal experience with the usability of Android phones has been good. An informal survey of people I know shows the same. No complaints from anyone. I've also found that giving an Android phone to someone who hasn't used one before has similar results to giving an iPhone to someone who hasn't used one. They can do simple things but get a bit lost.

So yes, please do mod him down fanboys.

Ballmer Slams Android As Cheap and Overcomplicated

Ardaen Re:Android has it's flaws (645 comments)

Sadly most of these problems are caused by the carrier, not Android itself. Because of this they are likely to occur on any phone. It's amazing there haven't been more such problems on the iPhone, but I guess that is a result of its locked down nature. Apple has fought tooth and nail to prevent anyone from putting anything on their phones. At least they finally gave in and let us have apps. Well some apps anyway, those that they approve...

CD Ripper 'Incites Law Breaking,' Says British Regulator

Ardaen Acceptable (204 comments)

implied it was acceptable to copy CDs, vinyl and cassettes without the permission of the copyright owner

That's because it is. Personal copies are very acceptable.

Wait wait, "format shifting" is illegal in the UK? That's messed up.

Nokia Shareholders Fight Back

Ardaen Re:Someone please tell me... (424 comments)

It wasn't a facebook page earlier. I think their server overloaded due to slashdotting and so they forwarded it to a facebook page. Seems like a reasonable way to keep the message up even if the server can't handle the sudden load.

Google vs. Bing — a Quasi-Empirical Study

Ardaen Re:OK, I took a shot at it, (356 comments)

Interesting, Bing gave me ad-laden junk for the first 4 results, the fifth was the main page. I didn't get anything like your first result.

I guess it likes you and hates me?

Internet Downloading Costs To Rise In Canada

Ardaen Re:Don't worry (433 comments)

Your right, the low population density and great distances in Canada do often make it more expensive and difficult to provide care and coverage for services such as healthcare. Still, the system has worked, except where privatization has eroded it.

Sun's Project Darkstar Game Server Platform No More

Ardaen Re:One of many... (82 comments)

Define rational. Is money your primary or only measure? Only in the short term? The next quarter, maybe the next year?

A project like this, if it took off, could be quite good for expanding the usage of the Java language. It might not be a success or a big success, but calling it a blue-sky project seems a bit unfair. Unless of course value is only defined by the next quarter.

iPad Is a "Huge Step Backward"

Ardaen Re:They're artificial limitations. That's the prob (1634 comments)

I wish it was that simple.

Lets go for an extreme example, I'm sure it will be taken out of context but I might as well try getting the point across.

Lets pretend Apple managed to make an exclusive agreement with another large organization, like say the government. This exclusive agreement means that all voting goes through Apple's proprietary software on their fancy new iPad.

Now of course, it is your choice to disagree with how things are done and not buy the iPad...

Yes, it is an extreme example. But you don't seem to be understanding the GP's point here:

accept whatever the corporate overlords give them, or go to a corner and shutup.

It is in their best interest to trap and control you. Stop telling people to just take it!
