Organ Damage In Rats From Monsanto GMO Corn

Artuir Re:Oh God, not the bourbon. (766 comments)

Isn't the entire goal of crossbreeding or selective breeding to alter the genetics of the result in cases like these?

How is that not genetic engineering? It would seem to me it's just a crude form of a control method for doing just that.

What Belongs In a High School Sci-Fi/Fantasy Lit Class?

Artuir Fortunately (1021 comments)

Luckily I was able to take a course like this in my junior year in high school (admittedly this was back in 1998/99). While I can't remember every project we did, the teacher was really into it and the class was very enjoyable. The three biggest things we did that I remember were watching (and/or reading if a film and book were both made, to compare the versions) Blade Runner, Ender's Game and 1984. Those three have stuck with me and made a very big impression, so I'd wager they're a good starting point. Most of the students really enjoyed them and class discussion was always a lot of fun when so much genuine interest was present.

Thank you for the clarification. I seem to have been modded flamebait when it was an honest question because at first glance things did not seem right to me, but I stand corrected!

iPhone 3GS Finally Hacked

Artuir Re:iTunes The Real Problem (376 comments)

It's amusing you bring that up. Why isn't apple getting into deep shit with the DOJ for antitrust practices? Microsoft included IE with windows forever and they got in a lot of hot water over it - just imagine if they had FORCED users to use IE.

Adblock Plus Maker Proposes Change To Help Sites

Artuir Re:Cue next extension in 3... (615 comments)

"Then i go back to my nicely locked down browser (no cookies, flash, etc without my OK) but in the process I've virtually guaranteed that no site i visit will ever get a dime in revenue from me unless they embed the ads from their own domain (haven't quite figured out how to block THOSE)."

There's an addon called "Remove It Permanently". It allows you to remove just about any object in a page (with a few options like similar or by domain). In conjunction with adblock and noscript, the internet is manageable again for me.
