Nexus 7 and Android Convertibles Drive Massive Asus Profit

B33RM17 Props to ASUS (232 comments)

It's good to see Asus posting a healthy profit thanks to their Android offerings. I'm sure the Nexus 7 was a good chunk of that.

Also, I wasn't surprised they mentioned HTC and their recent market woes. After buying the latest iteration of the EVO, I'm convinced they screwed themselves into this position with their own software. The build quality of their phone is top notch with the One series. However, the most recent releases of their Sense UI skin for Android have been some of the most bloated software I've ever used. This phone was lagging and taking it's sweet time loading anything within a few hours out of the box. Definitely a turn off for customer. I understand they want to differentiate their product and add increased value to the customer, but AOSP Android has been great since Ice Cream Sandwich. HTC really should stop trying to fix what isn't broken and offer some AOSP devices, along with some that have a much less cumbersome version of their framework added on. Sense has some features I really miss after putting a Jelly Bean ROM on my phone, but they definitely aren't compelling enough to make me switch back. /rant

Also, I'm curious to see if their Windows Phone 8 offerings start selling better than their Android phones. The WP8 devices have been getting some great reviews.

Apple Confirms iPhone 5 Preorders Top 2 Million In 24 Hours

B33RM17 Re:I'm curious... (428 comments)

Considering their current naming convention patterns, there could be up to 3 more models between then and now. Cross your fingers and hope they breach 1500 mAh by then lol.

Apple Confirms iPhone 5 Preorders Top 2 Million In 24 Hours

B33RM17 Re:I'm curious... (428 comments)

Ya know, your numbers are probly better than anything I coulda cooked up lol. It's just every time I see these blurbs about shattering previous pre-order records or product x eclipsing its predecessor's release, I wonder if these numbers are even valid. Simply trying to remain safely skeptical.

So far my biggest criticism of the new iphone, sight unseen, is their claims of battery life. While I understand there have been immense improvements in mobile battery life in the past year, the numbers Apple is claiming seem a bit lofty. They barely upped the battery capacity (1432 mAh? someting like that, all I know is its their most capacious battery yet, even if by only a minute margin) but they're claiming 8 hours of web browsing on 3G and LTE? My current book learning (studying Electrical Engineering) and current experience with an LTE equipped smartphone tells me those numbers most likely shouldn't be the same. Factor in the bigger screen which will have a higher power draw, and a faster processor, and these numbers just aren't adding up for me. I really want to see some battery tests.

Apple Confirms iPhone 5 Preorders Top 2 Million In 24 Hours

B33RM17 I'm curious... (428 comments)

So I'm not trying to incite a flame war, but I'm honestly curious to see who is coming from what in the pre-order figures. By which I mean, how many are current iphone users looking to have their latest and greatest, who's switching from one ecosystem to another, how many are first time smartphone buyer, etc.

I've always wondered how these "millions of pre-orders" figures broke down.

Ask Slashdot: Best Computer For a 7-Year Old?

B33RM17 Netbook? Duh and or hello? (423 comments)

I'd say a netbook would be perfect for him. Inexpensive, small keyboard, some are still powerful enough to run IDEs.

I had an Asus 1000HA for a couple years, the whole bottom opened up to upgrade components. However, I believe most current designs aren't as tinkerer friendly as older ones.

For Android Users, 2012 Is Still the Year of Gingerbread

B33RM17 Re:So? (257 comments)

Ah OK, didn't know how big of an issue it was for you. Figured I'd give you the heads up since the NA One X and Evo are pretty identical. I was on the fence about CM10 till last week when it finally started showing up in the nightlies. Well for the Evo at least.

For Android Users, 2012 Is Still the Year of Gingerbread

B33RM17 Re:Poor support from Carriers and Manufacturers (257 comments)

I wish I could mod you up more, because you sir definitely get it. I really feel like this Android update issue is being spun into something bigger than it really is. Yea it is a bit annoying that some manufacturers aren't even bothering to update a good portion of their phones. And dragging their feet updating the flagship ones. But I'm seeing more and more Android users that don't care if their phone could be updated, or even know about an update, because they're happy with the way it works. If it ain't broke, why fix it?

And while they're content not knowing or caring, I'm quite content rooting and flashing

Former Xerox PARC Researcher: Windows 8 Is a Cognitive Burden

B33RM17 What's with all the complaining? (404 comments)

I've been using the various release previews on a vm on my laptop, and just recently installed in on my desktop. And yet I still can't get why everyone is complaining. They took the start menu and changed it to fill the whole screen. OK. I understand that, no problem. Yet I collectively see from all across the internet: "OH DEAR LORD WHAT IS THIS UNHOLY ABOMINATION THAT STEALS MY SCREEN REAL ESTATE EVERY TIME I PRESS THE WINDOWS KEY? WHERE'S MY MENU???" Or worse yet: "It has a touch friendly interface? THIS INSTANTLY MEANS ITS USELESS WITH A MOUSE AND KEYBOARD." So hey, those are reasonable reactions. I applaud Microsoft for going out on a limb and merging the tablet and desktop OS. And I think think they've hit the mark to be honest. It's faster and prettier than 7, and I feel it's more user friendly. I really get the impression that those who are complaining the most either A) haven't spent time with it and are going off the complaints of others, or B) tried it out, looking for something to complain about.

I think I've trudged through enough insufferable comments blowing hot air, so if you've found mine insufferable in any way, welcome to the club.

I'm just sick of the herpring and the derping surrounding this software.
