Why did Microsoft skip Windows 9?

BCW2 Simple (399 comments)

Since every other version of Windows is a catastrophe, they are skipping the wrong number. 9 was going to be good so 10 will still suck because it's an even number. Or they know it's terrible and and actually didn't want to mislead us.

I think next winter will be:

BCW2 Reliable source (148 comments)

In the U. S. A. the Old Farmers Almanac is much more reliable on predictions than the National Weather Service has ever been. Next best option? No matter where you are, find a farmer over 70, they can "feel" what's coming. Their lives have depended on it forever.

Statistics Losing Ground To CS, Losing Image Among Students

BCW2 Not surprised (115 comments)

Statistics as taught in it's current form (just like economics) came about in the 50's, they were both designed by out of work mathematicians. Now to an unemployed Math PHD in the 50's with the start of the space program and the massive military research programs, how good were these guys? When I took Stat in college I was amazed. Take one set of data and produce two diametrically opposed answers and have them both correct? Sounds like rumor, gossip, and BS to me, not science.
No wonder there are lies, damn lies, and statistics!

Internet Explorer Vulnerabilities Increase 100%

BCW2 This is a surprise? (137 comments)

History shows that more than 80% of windows vulnerabilities are IE based. Only the gullible and foolish would use such an unsecure and worthless piece of crapware. IE has never been good M$ couldn't even give it away when Netscape cost money. Nobody would use it when it was free. M$ had to incorporate it into the OS before they got any real market share.

I suffer from jet lag ...

BCW2 Re:Of course it depends... (163 comments)

Agreed, the times I've traveled to Europe, I have taken 2 - 3 days to recover. From Europe to the US is always worse. When I go from the East coast to the Mountain time zone and back, it doesn't matter.

White House: Get ACA Insurance Coverage, Launch Start-Ups

BCW2 Re:Why? (578 comments)

The Military can't be done by the private sector and if you look at procurement it's anything but efficient. The Park service like any other Govt. agency has bloated administration that does nothing but shuffle endless paperwork. The rangers are the ones doing something worthwhile.

White House: Get ACA Insurance Coverage, Launch Start-Ups

BCW2 Why? (578 comments)

Why would anyone think the Government could run healthcare? Is there any sign of competence or efficiency in Medicare, Medicade, or the VA? All are inefficient and fraud ridden with time wasted by reams of worthless paperwork. There is not one single thing that the Government of the US has ever done more efficiently than the private sector.

Daylight Saving Time ...

BCW2 Idiocy (310 comments)

Best skywatching equipment at my disposal:

BCW2 When I was a kid (201 comments)

I used to get to look with a home made 8 inch telescope. Living down the road from DR. Clyde Tombaugh had it's advantages. Also got to hear the lecture about the discovery of Pluto several times. A very nice man.

Edward Snowden is ...

BCW2 Dishonest (601 comments)

The link is to an article where Snowden claims he got the job just to do this. That means his oaths taken to get the job were lies. He is just a traitor. There were other means that were legal to expose this program, he could have sent the data to every member of Congress, and acted like a true whistle blower instead of running to China like a thief in the night.

Re: Bitcoin, I most strongly agree with the following:

BCW2 Another opportunity to get ripped off (398 comments)

There will be an exchange rate like with any other currency. In every country I have ever been to there is a an "official" exchange rate" and an under the table one that is much better. Why would this be any different? Just another scam in the making.

Current favorite still-image camera type:

BCW2 A real camera (316 comments)

I still love my Nikon F2 that I got in 1977. Best 35 MM camera ever. Since it takes a DSLR capable of 24 MP to equal it and I don't have $2500 + laying around.... I stick with the heavy old workhorse.

How Old Were You When You First Got a Cell Phone?

BCW2 A different view (330 comments)

20 years ago if you saw a man with a cell phone you knew it was someone important like a doctor. Today you see someone that is on a leash to a higher power, like a wife.

I have yet to be leashed, but have had a wife for 29 years.

Using Technology To Make Guns Safer

BCW2 Nice idea but it won't happen (1013 comments)

There are 2 simple reasons why this isn't being done.
1. Cost for the indentification unit is prohibitive. It would double the cost of the weapon.
2. It has been proven over the years that you can not make something idiot proof. I don't care if it's a weapon or a power tool, some moron will always come along and try something nobody else ever imagined and injure themselves or someone else. Look at all the safety warnings in any instruction manual and realize that someone actually did that.

Teaching people to have a respect for human life would do more to stop these mass killings than anything else. When I was in High School (class of 74) half the vehicles in the student parking lot were pickup trucks with a gun rack in the back window. There was always a rifle and/or a shotgun in the rack. We never had anyone shot at school because we knew the difference between right and wrong.

I forward every single SPAM email to the Federal Trade commission for prosecution. If you live in the United States forward all SPAM to uce@ftc.gov it's how people like Ralsky end up in jail.

A Gentle Rant About Software Development and Installers

BCW2 Why? (338 comments)

Why does every windows application programmer think their program is so special or important that it needs to run in the background? The first thing to speed up any computer is to kill all the crappola trying run at start up. A program should run when started and when exited from it should completely shut down and even delete any temp files it created. I did a cleanup on a customers machine once and deleted over 10,000 temp files. That is lazy and stupid programming.

BCW2 Of course (348 comments)

Having grown up where the best Chile in the world comes from, Southern New Mexico, I object to the spelling of the chile without the e. 80% of the commercially grown chile was developed in the horticulture lab at New Mexico State University by Dr. Roy Nakayama from the 60's through the 80's.

Supreme Court: Affordable Care Act Is Constitutional

BCW2 Two ways to look at this (2416 comments)

One, Justice Roberts took something that was not written as a tax, only defended as one, and changed the legislation.

Two, Justice Roberts confirmed that every time Pelosi, Reid, and Obama claim something isn't a tax, they are liars. Which most of us already knew.

Google hates Adblock Plus

BCW2 BCW2 writes  |  about a year ago

BCW2 (168187) writes "A few days ago I had trouble with gmail, it would only load in basic html and had little functionality. It took 2 days of digging through the mostly useless Google help pages to find one mention of addons. If you disable Adblock Plus you get full functionality back. Now, starting intermittently on Friday, the same thing happens with Google's search page. Of course there was never an announcement or warning of any kind."

Are you a Democrat, Republican, or a Southerner?

BCW2 BCW2 writes  |  about 8 years ago _______________________________

Are you a Democrat, Republican or Southerner?

Here is a little test that will help you decide.

The answer can be found by posing the following question:

You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children.

Suddenly, an Islamic Terrorist with a huge knife comes around the corner,

locks eyes with you, praises Allah, raises the knife, and charges at you.

You are carrying a Glock cal 40, and you are an expert shot.

You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do?

Democrat's Answer:

Well, that's not enough information to answer the question!

Does the man look poor! Or oppressed?

Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack?

Could we run away?

What does my wife think?

What about the kids?

Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand?

What does the law say about this situation?

Does the Glock have appropriate safety built into it?

Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send
to society and to my children?

Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me?

Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me?

If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while
he was stabbing me?

Should I call 9-1-1?

Why is this street so deserted?

We need to raise taxes, have a paint and weed day and make this happier,
healthier street that would discourage such behavior.
This is all so confusing! I need to debate this withsome friends for few
days and try to come to a consensus.

Republican's Answer: BANG!

Southerner's Answer:

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! click.....

                        (sounds of reloading).

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! click
