Ask Slashdot: What Tech Products Were Built To Last?

BTWR Re:Early 2004 G4 iBook (702 comments)

I assume you either meant an iMac (or maybe even an iPaq), because not even Steve Jobs could have purchased an iPad in 2001.

Ask Slashdot: What Tech Products Were Built To Last?

BTWR Re:Old Nintendo Products (702 comments)

Do a web search for Gameboy in Iraq. You'll turn up a fully-functioning gameboy that survived mortars(bombs?) hitting a base. The thing is mostly black and has some of the plastic melting, but it still plays tetris and is on display in a museum.

I live in New York City and I can vouch for this. It's in the Nintendo World Store in Rockefeller Center. It's not technically a "museum," but it's in a display case on the 2nd floor with some special/vintage Nintendo products. It is half-melted as ausekills says. They have it auto-playing the original Tetris.

Create Your Own Bullet Time Camera Rig With Raspberry Pi

BTWR Gap commercial (88 comments)

I remember seeing The Matrix in the theatres (or even the trailer) and, while Bullet Time was awesome, I thought "Neat! It's just like that Gap ad on tv!"

Microsoft Integrating Xbox One Advertising With Kinect To Profile Users For Ads

BTWR Re:It is better than buying used games (300 comments)

That's why I do most of my used game shopping from Amazon. Great prices and, overall, a great company that has given excellent customer support to me over the years (along with their subsidiaries, especially Woot).

Real Version of Homer Simpson's Dream Car Built

BTWR Love this episode (53 comments)

Herb: While you're here, I want you to make yourselves right at home. Anytime you're hungry, anytime day or night, Cook will make you anything you want.
Homer: Even pork chops?
Herb: Absolutely. We have a tennis court, a swimming pool, a screening room--
Homer: You mean, if I want pork chops, even in the middle of the night, your guy will fry 'em up?
Herb: Sure. That's what he's paid for. Now, if you need towels, laundry--
Homer: Wait!
Herb: Maids--
Homer: Wait, wait, wait, wait! Let me see if I've got this straight. It's Christmas day, 4:00 a.m., there's a rumble in my stomach--
Marge: Homer, please!
Herb: Your old man sure loves pork chops!
Bart: He sure does, Uncle Herb.

In a Security Test, 3-D Printed Gun Smuggled Into Israeli Parliament

BTWR Re:Security (280 comments)

From what history seems to show, Arabs controlled Palestinian lands from 1948-1967. Israel did not own the West Bank, Gaza or Jerusalem (nor were Jews allowed to visit Jerusalem). Seems you want to blame the Jews for that though.

Sony, Microsoft Squabble Over Console Features, But the Real Opponent Is Apple

BTWR Re:"console sales in the United States dropped 21% (315 comments)

To be fair, I scanned the entire comment section, assuming I'd be replying to this exact comment. That was the first thing I saw when I read the 21% drop. Glad I'm not the only one.

Sony, Microsoft Squabble Over Console Features, But the Real Opponent Is Apple

BTWR "console sales in the United States dropped 21%" (315 comments)

Isn't that because the current generation is 7 years old? You're actually shocked that fewer people are buying computers designed with 2005 technology?

EA Is the Game Company Disney Was Looking For

BTWR X-Wing or TIE Fighter game, please (254 comments)

That's all I want, not another Star Wars: Battlefront game. KOTOR was great, but I don't need another one. XW and TF were 2 of the greatest games ever made. X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter was a letdown and X-Wing Alliance, while good, wasn't as good as its predecessors.

New Console Always-Online Requirements and You

BTWR Re:So what are the exclusives... (435 comments)

Xbox 360 wasn't my favorite In terms of exclusives (although I did enjoy some of the XBL downloads). It was, however, hands down the best online experience of all 3 consoles. Wii was non-existent and XBL is far better than PSN. But that's just my opinion.

New Console Always-Online Requirements and You

BTWR Re:Hyperbole (435 comments)

The problem isn't the "always online" part necessarily. The problem is the fact that a game disc will be tied to a single console, effectively eliminating the secondary market for used games like ebay, amazon and Gamestop.

Windows: Not Doomed Yet

BTWR Re:nope (737 comments)

Along the way, there were numerous failings - Windows 3.0, Windows 95 (while successful, was buggy) Windows ME, Windows Vista.

Good post.So what you're saying is that every-other Windows release is successful. Sales-wise and review-wise you'd be correct. We shall see what happens with Windows 9

Explosions at the Boston Marathon

BTWR Re:/. has servers that stay up - that's why, nerds (1105 comments)

I agree. As someone living in NYC at the time, none of our cell phones worked and television was knocked out for a while (I think it was CBS that was still broadcasting because their antenna was on the Empire State Building.).

A largely text-only site like Slashdot is the best scenario for such situations.

BTWR BTWR writes  |  more than 7 years ago

BTWR writes "IGN is reporting the rumor that Nintendo Power, the offical Nintendo Magazine is going to shut down. IGN reports: Nintendo of America was planning to move a significant chunk of its marketing and sales departments from Seattle to either San Francisco or New York, IGN has learned that the company may be planning to close or restructure its official Nintendo Power magazine. This would be a shame, as they became better since their restructuring last year. And, I owe Nintendo Power for giving me that free copy of Dragon Warrior all those years ago (not to mention the Zelda Collection too)."

Stop calling Bush a Nazi!!!

BTWR BTWR writes  |  more than 11 years ago STOP comparing Bush to the Nazis! Like him, don't like him, call him stupid, illegitimate president, you can even believe lies like he planned 9/11 or other conspiracy theories. Think he's doing it for oil, revenge, money, whatever...

But DO NOT COMPARE HIM TO HITLER!!! Adolf Hitler is the worst criminal in history. PERIOD. Whatever you feel about George Bush, you CANNOT put him on the level of basically lining up 6 MILLION people and gassing and shooting them dead - men, women, babies, homosexuals, gypsies, elderly etc (actually, this analogy would make it that he lined up 15+ million, but only actually killed about 6). Whenever people do that, it pisses me off beyond belief. Argue WHATEVER side you want, but when you paint Bush next to Hitler, you're not elevating Bush to some Satan-like demon, you're lowering Hitler's unspeakable crimes to a level of some sort of partisan-driven or greed-driven crusade, instead of Adolf Hitler's plan of pure evil with the intent on physically changing the species-makeup of the Planet into his ideal human being. Bush may not be good in your eyes, he may be horrible in your eyes, but the worst criminal in History? Stop your damn propaganda.
