BeeBeard "Inhabited" or "Inhabitable?" (114 comments)

He said that the ultimate goal for exoplanet researchers was to find habitable Earth-like and Mars-like planets.
(emphasis added)

While we all crack wise about the bizarro planet of our science fiction dreams, it bears pointing out that the point of the program is ostensibly to find other inhabitable planets--that is, potential sites for future human expansion, rather than other inhabited planets. The difference between the two is not insignificant, and is a nod to the somewhat conservative view that while it may prove impossible to find another planet like the Earth where life has evolved concurrently with our own, it is nevertheless very realistic to search for another planet like the Earth where life could thrive.

BeeBeard writes "A brilliant man known as "afarre" on the Aximsite forums designed and built the most elaborate PDA harness you will ever see. The harness features VGA and serial outputs, USB ports, and even an integrated pre-amp. There is also a YouTube video where he demonstrates the gear in use in his car. The sheer level of integration between the Pocket PC and other systems is stunning."

BeeBeard (999187) writes "The NY Times (free registration required blah blah blah) reports that Vladimir Kramnik has won the 2006 FIDE World Chess Championship. Kramnik's decisive win came after a quick succession of hard-fought games, with important wins scored by both players.

Before the match between Kramnik and Topalov, there had never before been a playoff for the World Chess Championship. The state of the Championship had been in disarray since then-reigning champ Gary Kasparov created a parallel chess championship in 1993. Kramnik's victory over Topalov has given the chess world its first undisputed World Champion in thirteen years."

BeeBeard writes "According to his wife on her weblog, well-known Linux kernel developer Alan Cox had his IBM laptop explode. From that blog: " Alan was on the other side of the room from the laptop. I was elsewhere. He yelled out, I ambled towards the room in my own good time, and then I heard Fire! Real fire! Call the fire brigade, now! and I speeded up a bit." Pics included!"
