US Government Fights To Not Explain No-Fly List Selection Process

Bill, Shooter of Bul Re:this would expose an enormous state secret. (244 comments)

Ah, the old, If this secret would be revlealed then the populace would rise up, idea.

Of course most people won't care. I don't. I know what they are doing and why. I wouldn't do things exactly as they are, but I'm not that upset over what they are doing to activley try and change anything.

Anita Sarkeesian, Creator of "Tropes vs. Women," Driven From Home By Trolls

Bill, Shooter of Bul Re:Slashdot comments indicative of the problem (1211 comments)

If you accuse her of doing it, you still look terrible by claiming that abuse doesn't exist. It does. I don't think anyone wins, here.

Except those that honestly acknowledge problems and resolve to make things better using the resources at their disposal.

Anita Sarkeesian, Creator of "Tropes vs. Women," Driven From Home By Trolls

Bill, Shooter of Bul Re:Slashdot comments indicative of the problem (1211 comments)

No, he's not asking if you stopped beating your wife. He's asking you" why do you beat your wife? " While the question presupposes guilt ( entirely justified in this case as the first few comments are proof), it does not force you into a situation where any valid reply forces your admission to the presupposed crime.

Research Shows RISC vs. CISC Doesn't Matter

Bill, Shooter of Bul Re:so why is intel's 14nm haswell still at 3.5 wat (159 comments)

Well, the power consumption of various processor architectures are a *bit* more complicated than RISC vs CISC which is the point of this story.

How Red Hat Can Recapture Developer Interest

Bill, Shooter of Bul Re:Docker & RedHat's Software Collections (232 comments)

Agreed on all points. I especially feel good supporting RedHat as it really does help drive the Gnu/Linux Ecosystem forward. Ubuntu has tried doing the same, but when it does there are always stings attached or development is behind closed doors.

Here's the bonkers thing: Systemd can do more *without* scripts than SysV can do *with* scripts.

Oh, now I understand why you hated my posts. You yourself rely on "systemd is not unix, therefore bad". Oh, well, then sorry for killing your sacred cow. Steak sandwiches anyone?

Choose Your Side On the Linux Divide

Bill, Shooter of Bul Re:My opinion on the matter. (810 comments)

An honest conversation about it would list those issues, rather than just stopping at KISS. Its like a one word answer to an question meant to spark a conversation. That's the annoying part about systemd discussions.

Choose Your Side On the Linux Divide

Bill, Shooter of Bul Re:My opinion on the matter. (810 comments)

You're interpretation of what is Simple, is. Simple is a piece of paper or an abacus. That's simple. Has you abacus ever crashed on you? QED.

Life is full of trade offs. Admitting that when discussing a complex engineering decision is a prerequisite.

Yeah, stupid me. Injecting X11 contraversies into one already about systemd.

While, I'm at it Vim users are smarter than everyone, and obviously I'll take Joel* as the superior host over Mike (good writer, sucky performer).

*Seriously watch the getting coffee in cars with comedians episode with him in it. Hilarious. He out does Seinfied.

Choose Your Side On the Linux Divide

Bill, Shooter of Bul Re:My opinion on the matter. (810 comments)

D'oh. I meant X as in an unknown thing that is universally disliked by the intended audience, not the display server protocol.

But no, systemd was never about just booting faster. Its always been about managing services better. They looked at upstart and decided they couldn't modify it, due to the Ubuntu copyright assignment, and decided to address some existing problems it had in managing services. It should be noted that upstart also starts machines pretty fast.

Choose Your Side On the Linux Divide

Bill, Shooter of Bul Re:My opinion on the matter. (810 comments)

Wow, that really makes systemd detractors seem like lazy people with no interest in advancing their knowledge or skill set.

I don't think that's the case at all. I think, for a lot of people, they don't have the challanges that systemd solves.

Also, it challanges a lot of sacred cows that people hold dear to them. You see kind of a religeous attachment to certain ideas, that is tough to give up, even when presented with a system that provides a different model of working. Then you get this whole game of analogy making. Everyone hates X, so lets compare this thing I don't like to X. Even thought its obviously very different from X.

NSA Agents Leak Tor Bugs To Developers

Bill, Shooter of Bul Re:Why Facebook or Google? (116 comments)

Cause the NSA ain't providing code, bandwidth, or servers to scale the system to millions of users. Google and Facebook have the knowledge and resources to actually do it, if they want.

But yeah, its a pretty dumb hope. They don't want you to have any anonymity as it is.

I think it would be cool if some one were to design a cryptocurrency wherein the proof of work was somehow related to the number of connections proxies. So mining would actually be providing anonymity to those who needed it and their would be an incentive to provide service. However that trick of providing indisputable proof of work, while not reveling the traffic or inbound/outbound connections might be a bit tricky to get right.

Ask Slashdot: What Do You Wish You'd Known Starting Out As a Programmer?

Bill, Shooter of Bul Advise (548 comments)

I wish when I was starting out, I knew how idiotic it would sound to tell everyone what I wished I knew when I was starting out. Cause, man, does it sound stupid.

Come children, let me pretend to be wise by telling your really obvious things I was not aware of when I was your age.

Intel's 14-nm Broadwell CPU Primed For Slim Tablets

Bill, Shooter of Bul Re:Thank GOD (96 comments)

Maybe because its a a combo of a chip design pivot that saved the company, much like this might do if its successful.

Back in the day AMD was KILLING intel with the amd64 design in price/performance over the Pentium 4 line. Intel scraped that design and went back to Pentium M, the mobile version of the Pentium 3. It called it the core duo/solo. So "core M" makes a lot of sense. A piviot to meet a competitor ( this time ARM ).

One of the worst things they've done to this site. I have *Friends* on facebook. I don't want them to know how much of a nerd I am. Furthermore, the slashdot stories aren't stories, they're summaries about stories. If I was going to post something about the topic to facebook, i would just link the source.

Negitive feedback

Bill, Shooter of Bul Bill, Shooter of Bul writes  |  more than 6 years ago

I've gotten a couple posts questioning the validity of my attempted humor. Some people really don't think I'm that funny. It only takes three different mods to hit +5 funny, and I myself have seen a few other people have posted that aren't that funny. In any case, I am my own worst critic. Several ones I've posted I didn't think deserve any attention at all. So, in the future, I'll try and limit myself even further, to truly post only what is really funny, rather than some things that I think might be funny.

For those who are annoyed with my sense of humor, just be glad I was filtering out a good 80% of what I thought to post. You're seeing what I consider to be the top 20% of my humor. I'll try and tighten that down to at least 10%.

Still confused about Freaks.

Bill, Shooter of Bul Bill, Shooter of Bul writes  |  more than 9 years ago I realise that every journal I've ver written is about freaks. Sorry, but I'm fasinated by them. Recently, I got two more. I'm just curious why anyone marks anyone as a freak. Anyone know? Any of my new freaks care to elaborate as to why they decided I was a Foe? I try to restrain myself from flaiming or posting anything too ofensive. If there is something I really feal strongly about that might offend someone I'll post it anyway, but I'll try to do so as clearly and logically as possible. I understand that everyone might not understand or agree with them, but I would think that they would respect the opinion and the manner it was presented in. Or do people just use Foes to demark those they disagree with? I understand using it for Trolls or those truely offensive, but why use it to censor those you disagree with? Are they so sure of themselves that they could never be wrong on an issue? Or are they afraid that they will read a well reasoned argument that makes them change their mind? Let me know, will you.
