Netflix Gives Data Center Tools To Fail

Black-Man Re:Sounds like Netflix is a mess (75 comments)

Load balancing is a mess. The vast majority of load balancing algorithms on VIPs are round robin-based. Fine for http requests from a single UI and that's about it.

This application allows balancing of the services - not the servers.

A Decade of Agile Programming — Has It Delivered?

Black-Man Re:Indeed, THERE IS NO SILVER BULLET (395 comments)

I've worked w/ 2 or 3 apps written w/ database abstraction in mind. They use BLOB's in all the table columns and the middleware handles the referential integrity.

1. Performs like CRAP
2. Good luck debugging when you have an issue, especially when your primary key, aka acct number is hidden in a BLOB column causing issues at the db level.

Oh... and these folks were self-proclaimed geniuses.

A Decade of Agile Programming — Has It Delivered?

Black-Man Re:Maybe they did it wrong... (395 comments)

Yes, but PM's think Agile is a license to introduce changing requirements through-out the first three stages.

Oracle Claims Google 'Directly Copied' Our Java Code

Black-Man They Forked Standard Java Packages? (675 comments)

I would give them a free pass if they would have made these packages available to everyone. If not... good for Oracle.

So much for "Don't be evil".

GM Is Selling Saab To Spyker Cars

Black-Man Re:How is this news for nerds? (264 comments)

I thought one of the "quirks" of saab's was the push button starter - which GM killed infuriating loyal saab owners and further pushing the brand into oblivian.

Wal-Mart, Amazon Battle For Online Retail's Future

Black-Man Walmart not as well-run as believed... (272 comments)

I wouldn't step foot in a Walmart where I live. Crowded... cluttered aisles... dirty. But a place I visit in WV where the Walmart has no competition... its clean, very organized and very Target-like. It seems when they get serious about their business, they do fine. I would be worried if I was Amazon.

We Really Don't Know Jack About Maintenance

Black-Man "not as glamorous as fresh, raw coding" (260 comments)

And that is the problem. Everyone thinks the glamour is the new code... which they invariably *screw* up and expect someone else to come in and fix those "details". Developers/Architects suffer from ADD.

DC Fires Tech Contractors, Puts Employees On Leave

Black-Man Re:Kundra sounds like a great manager (51 comments)

Really... how could the director of the department how no idea what was going on w/ the contracting? Uhh... that IS his job. Lord knows the guy wasn't doing any *real* work like architecture.

ISS's Node 3 Might Be Named "Colbert"

Black-Man Re:Not likely... (276 comments)

He was funny mocking George W. but he has become a parody of himself lately and he's not that funny. When his show is cancelled next year, people will be asking "Colbert who?"

GM Cornered Into Defending the Volt

Black-Man The Volt Was For Show (769 comments)

Mgt: "Quick... mock up some electric-car to help w/ our plea for bailout money so they don't think we're not forwarding-thinking w/ inept management".

Anyone who falls for this trick deserves the billions being thrown down the tubes. Inept management coupled w/ a draconian union equals insolvency.

Configuring a Windows PC For a Senior Citizen?

Black-Man Re:Install mac os-x (823 comments)

I steered my 80 year old mother to a Mac... best decision I could have made. Who wants to be on the phone w/ their mother over computer issues? With my mother... it would be all my fault... I would never live it down and the aggravation would never be worth it.

Of course I had to pitch in $... because she is a cheap skate and knows PC's are a couple hundred bucks cheaper and there was no way she was gonna spend extra $ when she didn't have to. Typical of one who lived through the Great Depression I suppose.

Are Newspapers Doomed?

Black-Man Re:Oh No! (338 comments)

The problem was these opinion rags were usually penned by anonymous sources - so the public had no idea who actually wrote the piece nor underwritten the rag. Benjamin Franklin excelled at this.
