Programming Things I Wish I Knew Earlier

BluePeppers Version Control (590 comments)

Put everything in version control. Everything. EVERYTHING!

Well. You could skip /home, but I know a roll back of /etc has saved me a couple of times on config upgrades.

Remember that once code is deleted, you can't get it back. However, version control changes that. Version control is one of the most vital tools for anyone developing/working with a computer.

Oh and git rocks and stuff :)

With World Watching, Wikileaks Falls Into Disrepair

BluePeppers Re:How Deliciously Appropriate (258 comments)

And thoes soldiers are in a war that has killed 100,000~ civilians? So maybe exposing the abuses the soldiers commit makes me wish I could walk into their barracks and give them a massive slap round the face.

Who shall be the first to say it. Rupert Murdoch?

Oh and of course, I do realise that the left has much bias aswell. But R.M. does take it to a new level.

"Cumulative Voting" Method Gaining Attention

BluePeppers Re:not proportional voting, rather representation (375 comments)

Yes Great Britain does have members of parliment and linked constituencies. However, it's not massivly popular, so I personaly wouldn't use it as an example.

Mozilla Foundation Begins Redraft Process For MPL

BluePeppers Re:Iceweasle (65 comments)

I use archlinux, and I think it's called shireotoko by default. I've rebranded mine, using the firebrand script, but frankly... well I don't like to play up to trolls, but the point of my comment was that a lot of people find that particular clause rather annoying. If you wish to be a penickity git and tell me it's icecat, I couldn't care less :)

BluePeppers Impuse (596 comments)

Personaly, I always find impulse charity much more satisfying than impulse buying. So most of my total (50-200) comes from finding a cause while browsing the web, and giving them a fiver or so if I have any cash in my paypal account.

First Look At Latest Ion-Infused Asus Eee PC

BluePeppers Ion Infused (323 comments)

What is up with the names?! Ion infused?? Definition of Infused: An infusion is the outcome of steeping plants with a desired flavour in water or oil. Defenition of an Ion: An ion is an atom or molecule where the total number of electrons is not equal to the total number of protons. Right...

So, saying they get their ions from a sensible source, such as salt, and use a plant with salt on it, such as seaweed, then what we actually have is a laptop that has been dipped in seaweed oil? No wonder people don't trust major companies any more... all this sounds very fishy.

BluePeppers Mirror (83 comments)

If people want a link to a mirror, one for the 64 linux binaries is:

However, I'm getting an error, stating "Error - No map files found.

You must place all level files in a directory with the same base name.
The default should then be in \maps\maps001.txt"

I've tried renaming them, but it doesn't seem to work. And what's going on with the backslashes?

TSA Seizes Disney World Toys

BluePeppers So they won (62 comments)

We've got to hand it to the terrorists... They're good at what they do. They set out to affect our lives in a detrimental way, and we let them do it, doing their work for them most of the time, with "anti-terror" measures and "national security" legislation.

Keeping Up With DoD Security Requirements In Linux?

BluePeppers Re:Switch distros? (211 comments)

I wouldn't take gentoo, you'll spend all day updating (and most of the night). I suggest Arch linux, for: a, Binary repos b, Easy packaging c, Source install tracking d, Up to date repo's (relatively) e, Rolling release distribution f, Packages are easy to mark out of date

Goofle investigating Chinese employees

BluePeppers BluePeppers writes  |  more than 4 years ago

BluePeppers (1596987) writes "The Guardian is reporting that Google China is investigating it's staff in lieu of The Incident. ""We're not commenting on rumour and speculation. This is an ongoing investigation and we simply cannot comment on the details," a Google spokeswoman said. Security analysts told Reuters the malicious software or malware used in the attack was a modification of a trojan called Hydraq. A trojan is a hidden program allowing unauthorised access to a computer. The analysts said the sophistication in the attack was in knowing whom to attack, not the malware itself.""

Musicians oppose anti-piracy measures in the UK

BluePeppers BluePeppers writes  |  about 5 years ago

BluePeppers writes "The Guardian has a story, primarily about a deal that allows YouTube to broadcast music videos again, but also covers a story about a coalition of artist unions that are opposing new legislation in the UK that would punish file sharers harder. From the article: "A coalition of bodies representing a range of stars including Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John and Damon Albarn attacks the proposals as expensive, illogical and "extraordinarily negative". The Featured Artists Coalition (FAC), the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (Basca) and the Music Producers Guild (MPG) have joined forces to oppose the proposals to reintroduce the threat of disconnection for persistent file sharers, which was ruled out in the government's Digital Britain report in June.""
