The Hackers Who Recovered NASA's Lost Lunar Photos

Capt.DrumkenBum Re:Hackers? (88 comments)

I agree with you, but you and I don't get a vote. The next time someone convinces someones grandmother to give out their bank password there will be one more story in the media about evil hackers.
Perhaps it is time to surrender. I gave in when they started calling this "." a dot. It hurt, but I got over it... Mostly.

GoPro Project Claims Technology Is Making People Lose Empathy For Homeless

Capt.DrumkenBum Re:Nope, it's the homeless (320 comments)

The homeless I see often near my work.
Crying baglady. (Always on the same corner, amd always crying.)
Shirtless birthday guy. (It is always his birthday, and he moves corners.)
Homeless HIV+ guy. (He is so unflaggingly upbeat and positive, [pun intended], that I have given him a few bucks once in a while.)
I need to get to $PLACE to see my daughter. (I fell for it the first time I saw him. Now I loudly call him on his BS.)

Just think about how it will be if you are drinking your starbucks that was heated by burning cow dung..

Well, it might taste better. :)
I love good coffee. Therefore I can't stand Starbucks.

It would be great if people could request an update on a specific location. Possible way to monetize that would be that a person could pay to climb the queue.

Sorry, but I was producing 'spaghetti code' long before windows 95 came out.
Perhaps I should sue. :)

60 Minutes Dubbed Engines Noise Over Tesla Model S

Capt.DrumkenBum Re:Are these the same editors who.. (544 comments)

the propeller noises to the jet in "Airplane!" ?

I am quite sure that was done on purpose. You know, that was the joke...
Perhaps they should have just used a whooshing sound instead.
(For the humour impaired, the whooshing sound is the sound of the joke passing right over someones head.) :)

Gunshot Victims To Be Part of "Suspended Animation" Trials

Gunshot Victims To Be Part of "Suspended Animation" Trials

Capt.DrumkenBum Re:Space travel (357 comments)

There is a problem with your plan.
What if two spiders somehow gets on the ship to mars? With no men to kill the spiders, the women would be over run in no time. :)

Lactose intolerant, means no yogurt either.

Facebook Buying Oculus VR For $2 Billion

Being able to shoot the things on Facebook that annoy me, might make it worthwhile. But I will need a bigger gun.
Say, a BFG-9000.

Jimmy Wales To 'Holistic Healers': Prove Your Claims the Old-Fashioned Way

Capt.DrumkenBum Re:You know what they call alternative medicine... (517 comments)

1) A healthy mix of fresh vegetables (a lot), dairy products (some), and proteins (some meat, fish, eggs)
2) It tastes good
3) I really like eating it

The problems with your plan, (For me at least.) I hate vegetables. They taste terrible to me. The very few Veg that I do like are all high starch, potatoes, corn, etc. Also severely lactose intolerant.
Honestly a choice between a salad and going hungry, I am going to have to think about it for a while.
So #1 pretty much eliminates 2 and 3.

So what mostly works for me is lots of meat, eggs, some fish, as much as I can of what veg I do like, and a multivitamin every day. Along with a heck of a lot of walking. (Over 5 miles a day, average.)

According to my doctor, I am disgustingly healthy.

Solaris and encryption

Capt.DrumkenBum Capt.DrumkenBum writes  |  about 4 years ago

Capt.DrumkenBum (1173011) writes "I have spend days searching for a solution to a problem, but I can't find one.

I have a MySql database with not for public consumption data in it, running on a Solaris 10 server using ZFS. I figured for safety I would encrypt the database files, but it seems that there is no way of doing this. ZFS filesystem encryption is pending, Truecrypt is not viable under Solaris. I can't believe this is impossible. Has anyone else found a solution?"
