Solaris No Longer Free As In Beer

Carra The book (392 comments)

For a minute there I thought I wasted seven euros on Lems book or Tarkovsky's movie. Luckily it's only a free Solaris license.

The Evolution of Reading In the Digital Age

Carra Re:Problems.... (143 comments)

I rented the Dutch translated version of Peter Hamiltons "Nights Dawn Trilogy" from my local library. So after reading the first book I of course wanted to read the next book. Guess what? The library doesn't have it. Worse, the publisher has decided not to translate it. So I went ahead and bought it from an English book website who sent me both sequels two days later. I don't blame my library, they have a nice choice of books including the Sci Fi and fantasy classics. You can go ahead and rent the Dutch versions of Dune, The Wheel of time or Sword of Truth series. But English Sci Fi? There aren't enough people who read that to buy those. Since I bought that first book I bought a lot more, often works that aren't translated. And it's a lot cheaper than buying Dutch books, the average book I bought costs me about €7.5 which includes a free delivery.

Why You Can't Pry IE6 Out of Their Cold, Dead Hands

Carra Re:Why expect companies to "upgrade"? (416 comments)

.NET 3.5 is not supported on Windows 2000 however. This sadly means that the management forbids us to upgrade our application from .NET 2.0 to .NET 3.5 because one customer still has about ten windows 2000 pcs...

When I order a HD movie to be seen through my cable I can start watching in seconds.

It's faster than or at least on par with downloading an mp3.

Carra FxCop (420 comments)

Our build system now checks the code with M$ FxCop. Any problems with the cultural settings and the build stops.

We hit a brick the day our program was started in Turkey. Having that problem once is more than enough.

Nvidia's DX11 GF100 Graphics Processor Detailed

Carra Re:Feh. (220 comments)

1) You'll spend a lot more money on games. A game on pc is about 25% cheaper than on the consoles. And the pc gets these sweet weekend deals.
2) I use my pc for other stuff except gaming. Browsing slashdot for one.

NVIDIA Ships Decent DX10 Graphics Card For Under $100

Carra Re:Yay! Re-badged 9800GT FTW! (208 comments)

The've been doing it for ages.

A geforce 4 mx was based on the geforce 2 chip set. So it was not only weaker then the other geforce 4 cards, it was also weaker then the previous, third generation. The reason that they keep doing this is quite simple, they sold even if every magazine listed is as a must avoid:

"Despite harsh criticism by gaming enthusiasts, the GeForce4 MX was a market success. Priced about 30% above the GeForce 2 MX, it provided better performance, the ability to play a number of popular games that the GeForce 2 could not run well—above all else—to the average non-specialist it sounded as if it were a "real" GeForce4—i.e., a GeForce4 Ti. Although it was frequently out-performed by the older and more expensive GeForce 3, many buyers were unaware, particularly as Nvidia was quick not to let the GeForce 3 remain on the market. GeForce 4 MX was particularly successful in the PC OEM market, and rapidly replaced the GeForce 2 MX as the best-selling GPU.".

Warez Moving From BitTorrent to Conventional Hosting Services

Carra Re:Welcome to the real world (366 comments)

Indeed. I remember the days when sites like yahoo and geocities offered online file storage, limited to 20mb a file.

Programs popped up which automatically made accounts on those services and uploaded your files. And http sites offering all new titles as geocities uploads. Those sites fought back with captchas.

Then came napster file sharing. Then came bittorent file sharing...

And now it's back to http warez.
