Robotic Bartender Programmed To Recognize When You Are Ready For a Drink

CokeBear Put even more people out of work (90 comments)

Great, now even more of us will be unemployed. Won't even be able to get a job tending bar, when a robot can replace us.

You think the economy is bad now, wait until unemployment is 60%. /Yes, I know I can always train for a better job and work harder, but that doesn't change the numbers. In the future there won't be jobs for most people. What will society look like at that point, with a massive unemployed underclass?

Apple Has Too Much Money

CokeBear Give half the money to the 3 big stakeholders (570 comments)

Take half the money, divide it into 3 piles, for the 3 stakeholders:
1) Shareholders in the form of a one-time dividend.
2) Employees get a one time bonus
3) Customers get a gift card based on their purchases in the past quarter.

Apple is still left with 50 Billion, and keeps everyone happy.

When they hit $100B again, rinse & repeat.

Intel Launches Sandy Bridge-E Series Processors

CokeBear Re:Mac Pro? (204 comments)

I meant that I've had some flavor of Apple Pro product under my desk for 10 years, upgrading every 1-3 years. Not the same machine all that time

Intel Launches Sandy Bridge-E Series Processors

CokeBear Mac Pro? (204 comments)

Could this be the processor for a new Mac Pro? Or will Apple wait for Ivy Bridge.

I've had a Mac Pro (or its predecessor) under my desk for over 10 years now; upgrading regularly. Even if its not the top selling Apple Product, its still the machine that Pros are looking for.

Renewable Energy Production Surpasses Nuclear In the US

CokeBear Re:So then. (452 comments)

Not only can it scale, but eventually you get a very distributed power network (think solar panel on every rooftop & mini windmill in every backyard)

Retailer Calls Rivals' Bluff On "HDMI Scam"

CokeBear Re:Best Buy tried to sell me an HDMI cable... (664 comments)

The worst part (or best, depending on your perspective) is that he's probably cool with you not buying the TV, since he was going to make as much profit from the cable as from the TV.

During the last Canadian election, seniors (in mostly Liberal-leaning areas) were robocalled and told that there voting place had changed. Does "free speech" include the right to lie to people in an attempt to reduce the voter turnout of a specific group of voters?

Bill Clinton Suggests Internet Fact Agency

CokeBear Facts have a Liberal Bias (336 comments)

Such an agency would be inherently biased, because as Stephen Colbert has taught us, the facts and reality have a liberal bias!

National Academy of Science Urges Carbon Tax

CokeBear Its a good idea, but must replace Income Tax (875 comments)

The only way to sell it to the masses would be to promote it as the elimination of Income Taxes. Set a date (20 years?) by which point income taxes will be eliminated, and slowly ramp up the Carbon (GHG) tax while reducing income tax over the same period of time.

What? You're opposed to eliminating Income Tax?

Canadian Minister Lies On Net Surveillance Claims

CokeBear Re:STOP THE PRESSES! (155 comments)

The majority of Canadians oppose the Conservatives. It is an unfortunate bug in our system of government that the centre-left and left-wing parties that together represents well over 60% of Canadians are in opposition at the moment.

Canadian Minister Lies On Net Surveillance Claims

CokeBear Re:STOP THE PRESSES! (155 comments)

As a Canadian, I can assure you that he most certainly is the Canadian version of Don Rumsfeld. And the Prime Minister is our very own Dick Cheney. (He's not Bush, he's much smarter than that, which makes him all the more dangerous)

Visualizing False Positives In Broad Screening

CokeBear Re:Not possible, at least for now (365 comments)

This is the reason I play. I recognize the virtual impossibility of winning the jackpot, but between the time I buy the ticket and the time of the draw (or whenever I get around to checking my numbers) I get significant pleasure (far more than $1 worth) imagining what I would do if I won the jackpot.

However, giving this reason for playing, perhaps the most rational course of action would be to only buy one ticket, and simply never check the numbers...

Immigration

CokeBear CokeBear writes  |  more than 8 years ago

I think people are missing the point with this immigration stuff. The reason there are illegal immigrants coming into the country are the simple laws of supply and demand. There are more jobs then there are people to fill them (particularly the crappy jobs on the lowest rungs of the economic ladder) and the result is that they are filled with whoever is available. Because there are insufficient legal immigrants to fill those jobs, they get filled with illegals. The solution, of course, is to increase legal immigration to the point where it is equal to the current total of legal + illegal immigration. All the jobs will be filled, and there won't be as much of a vacuum pulling people into the country. Government policy will also be able to choose where those immigrants come from, what skills they have, what language they speak, etc. If everyone who wants to enter can do so easily and legally, then the problem will go away quietly. People won't feel the need to try to enter illegally, if they are more likely to get in legally, and in the process, we also catch those that we really really want to keep out. (Terrorists, criminals, etc). I'm sure there are flaws in my plan, but its a starting point for a discussion. Comments?
