Human Rights Watch: Petition Against Robots On the Battle Field

Copper Nikus Re:Fear of robots is a red herring (275 comments)

In the old days kings used to lead their soldiers into battle. In modern times this is impractical and counterproductive.

The vicepresident doesn't have much to do. Why not send him or her to lead the charge into battle? I think VP Cheney would have loved that.

Human Rights Watch: Petition Against Robots On the Battle Field

Copper Nikus Re:Movie Quote (275 comments)

To win, you have to kill the enemy. To kill the enemy, you need efficient soldiers who are committed to the mission.

To win all you have to do is persuade the enemy to give up fighting. That is how the USA lost the wars in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.

White House Petition To Make Cell Phone Unlocking Legal Needs 11,000 Signatures

While on the subject of women and pink guns, here is a video of a properly trained girl using a pink gun for its intended purpose: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiiQQP4-Ijw

What would have been the outcome if the girl hadn't had that cute gun, or hadn't been trained to use it properly?

White House Petition To Make Cell Phone Unlocking Legal Needs 11,000 Signatures

Copper Nikus Re:I'm sure posting it on /. (193 comments)

Your comment about "women and gays" makes it difficult to take seriously your more valid criticisms.

I will admit I wasn't trying to be serious with that comment. I am in fact 100% in favor of women and gays having as many guns as they want in whatever color they prefer, as long as they join the NRA ASAP and receive adequate training in their safe and proper use. Hitting a target with real guns is a lot harder than hollywood would like us to believe. The reason is that real guns have a lot of recoil, while hollywood guns do not. This video illustrates my point very well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXfg5o1ZVq4

I doubt, but would be interested to see any research, that any changes to the colour of a gun would have much effect on their attractiveness to children.

Go to the toy section of any store and take close notice of the colors used by the toys and the toy packaging. I assure you there is plenty of reliable research behind those choices. I agree that guns need to be kept away from children reach regardless of color, except at the shooting range under close supervision and with proper training.

Regulating the color of firearms probably could pass constitutional muster, and it could immediately make it clear that a particular firearm was not legal. I think it would also have a huge impact on sales to the "macho" crowd. .

For some strange reason gun control people like to assume criminals obey the law. They are wrong. "If we make all guns illegal then criminals will have to get rid of them" the naive gun control folks think. In most places there are already laws that prohibit criminals from owning guns. Passing more of the same won't change anything.

Nothing would prevent criminals from paining their existing guns pink in order to make them look legit if they wish to do so. However, since most criminals carry their guns concealed, it really doesn't matter much to them what the gun color is.

There might be kids out there who get guns to look macho or cool, but for the vast majority of legal gun owners a gun is nothing more than the right tool for the right job. A gun serves the same purpose as an electric drill, which is to make small holes on different targets. The gun is better than the electric drill when the holes need to be made at some distance from the target. This is sometimes necessary, such as when you return home and find a stranger hidding in one of the rooms waiting to ambush you (happened to me once).

I think cops would look cute with pink firearms.

Then why not start a whitehouse petition asking for cops to wear pink uniforms too?

And "gang bangers" might just look silly

If gang bangers start teasing each other over their pink guns this will surely lead to even more gun violence.

Fruit Flies Medicate Offspring With Alcohol

Copper Nikus Re:wow (64 comments)

"alcohol can be toxic" I'd better reduce my intake to 50 beers a day.

I'ts worse than that. Alcohol is a level 1 carcinogen, so it's in the same list as asbestos, plutonium and gamma rays.

Fruit Flies Medicate Offspring With Alcohol

Copper Nikus Re:'Smarter'? (64 comments)

Per TFA, the female fruit flies prefer laying their eggs on alcohol containing food when the killer female wasps are around, but prefer non-alcoholic food when there are no wasps or when only male wasps are around. They can even tell the difference between different species of wasp. That is smarter than some people I know, let me tell you.

For Businesses, the College Degree Is the New High School Diploma

Copper Nikus Re:I'm getting a different message (728 comments)

The modern degree sends a message that you are a herd animal, to the point that you will stay with the herd even to the point of your own financial ruin.

Exactly. That is why when I look for a lawyer, dentist or doctor I make sure they didn't go to college. If I see any degrees hanging on the wall during the first visit I am out there ASAP!

Flu Shot Doing Poor Job of Protecting Older People This Year

Copper Nikus Re:It's Fun To Play With Mother Nature (205 comments)

The majority of the people that take the shot end up sick within 72 hours.

Obviously you have no idea how vaccines work. Please do a google search on this subject and you will understand why feeling some sickness shortly after taking a vaccine is a sign the vaccine is doing its job.

One last thing, why do most doctors and nurses refuse to take the vaccine???

False. Most doctors and nurses do take the flu vaccine. Some do object but it is due to various reasons, including allergy to the vaccine and religious beliefs.

Flu Shot Doing Poor Job of Protecting Older People This Year

Copper Nikus Partially Effective? (205 comments)

I had the flu shot this year and still got the flu a couple months later. However it was a mild case of flu, so I think the vaccine did some good. I go to the gym regularly several times a week and take exercise classes as well as use the exercise machines. In the exercise clases I am exposed to plenty of sweaty and less than sterile mats, dumbells, balance balls, etc, and we lay on the floors a lot. Perhaps it was unrealistic to think a vacine could completely protect me from that much exposure to germs.

White House Petition To Make Cell Phone Unlocking Legal Needs 11,000 Signatures

Copper Nikus Re:I'm sure posting it on /. (193 comments)

What a harebrained idea.

This will drastically increase the number of women and gays who own guns. Do you really want your girlfriend or gayfriend to have a loaded pink gun during their monthly PMS time?

This will also make dangerous guns look like attractive toys to children. Why in the world would anybody want that?

Finally, this will create a huge black market for non-pink guns. If the gov can't keep controlled substances from the streets, what makes you think they can keep non-pink guns from the streets?

Are Plastic Bag Bans Making People Sick?

Copper Nikus Re:Sniff test (533 comments)

We've known for some time that reusable grocery bags were like keyboards - absolutely filthy.

I think they need to look at the cooking habits of the people there. Cooking kiils germs, but maybe the enlightened people of San Francisco are more likely to eat food raw for the sake of the planet?

Facebook paid no taxes despite record profits

Copper Nikus Not as bad as it sounds? (2 comments)

So a large portion of the tax breaks is stock options to employees, and of course the employees will have to pay taxes on the net gain from those options once they are exercised. So Uncle Sam gets its slice of the pie eventually, possibly at a higher tax rate than if Facebook had been the one writting the checks to the IRS.

Chinese Supplier Gets Dumped By Apple For Fraudulently Using Underage Labor

Copper Nikus Re:it's the children that suffer (206 comments)

Hooray, instead of working they now can live on the street and starve to death.

Not necessarily. According to TFA:

When new violations are found, Apple requires its suppliers to return the workers back to a school chosen by the family and finance their education. "In addition, the children must continue to receive income matching what they received when they were employed. We also follow up regularly to ensure that the children remain in school and that the suppliers continue to uphold their financial commitment," wrote Apple in its latest report.

Of course I have no idea if those lofty goals actually happen or not.

Ask Slashdot: Best Webcam To Augment Impaired Vision?

Copper Nikus Re:tablet / phone paired with MHL (63 comments)

If grandma is going to sit at the normal 6 to 8 feet from the 1080p HDTV, I am not sure the text will be any more legible than on a 1080p 10 inch android tablet held 1 foot from here face. With a tablet-only solution the touch screen can provide a less intimidating and more intuitive user interface than a linux PC + mouse would. Finally, the tablet-only solution is a far more portable and uncomplicated setup. Grandma can read her paper books anywhere she wants (car, bus, train, front porch, doctor office waiting room, etc) using a tablet instead of always having to use the room where the big hdtv + clunky linux PC + clunky webcam + clunky mouse + table for the mouse happen to be.

TED 2013: Sitting Causes Cancer?

Copper Nikus Copper Nikus writes  |  about a year and a half ago

Copper Nikus (1615089) writes "It was only a matter of time. First asbestos is found to cause cancer. Then smoking is found to cause cancer, followed by alcoholic beverages. Now, even sitting in a chair is believed to cause cancer. WTF?

According to a recent TED 2013 speech by Nilofer Merchant, sitting in a chair is at least as dangerous as smoking. Not only does spending an average of 9.3 hours a day sitting in a chair gives you a sore butt, it also is claimed to contribute 10 percent of the risk of breast and colon cancer, 6 percent of the risk of heart disease, and 7 percent of the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Ms. Merchant wants to encourage office workers to "walk and talk". Apparently well known celebrities such as Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs and Jack Dorsey are/were big fans of the walk and talk concept.

Ironically, most of the spectators at TED 2013 were sitting down while she was giving her speech. Nevertheless many were enthusiastic about having a new excuse for standing around the water cooler "talking business".

Ms. Merchant is a corporate director and former Autodesk executive."

Flies Get Drunk in Order to Survive

Copper Nikus Copper Nikus writes  |  about a year and a half ago

Copper Nikus (1615089) writes "In yet another fascinating example of insects being smarter than we give them credit for, this arstechnica article describes how fruit flies are able to fight back against deadly wasps by using alcohol. From the article:

A study in today's issue of Science suggests fruit flies are capable of medicating not only themselves but their offspring as well. And their medication of choice? Alcohol. The threat for these flies is any of a number of small, parasitic wasps. These wasps lay eggs on the larva or pupa of the flies, and their offspring feed on the animal internally, often killing them in the process. (Flies have larval stages, during which we call them maggots, and pupate just as butterflies do before emerging in their adult form.) Once infected, there isn't much one of the larva can do to get rid of the parasite. Its one option: booze. Fruit flies, as their name implies, like to dine on fruit, especially during the larval stages. In many cases, that involves ingesting the alcohol that's produced by natural fermentation of rotting fruit (this can approach 20 percent alcohol content). Some species of flies have developed the ability to tolerate this alcohol as they chew through the fruit as maggots. But for most of the wasp species, even moderate levels of alcohol are toxic."

Are Mosquitos Becoming More Intelligent?

Copper Nikus Copper Nikus writes  |  about a year and a half ago

Copper Nikus (1615089) writes "An article at the BBC makes a shocking claim about mosquitoes. It appears some individual insects in the wild have developed the ability to ignore the very popular DEET repelent after a first exposure. Imagine what misery this will bring to the human race if this trait spreads to the general mosquito population through the process of evolution through natural selection (or through divine intervention if you happen to be a creationist)."

Alcohol Causes Cancer???

Copper Nikus Copper Nikus writes  |  about a year and a half ago

Copper Nikus (1615089) writes "Did you know alcohol is a carcinogen? I sure didn't until I read this article.
http://www.myhealthnewsdaily.com/3539-alcohol-causes-cancer-deaths.html

Wikipedia seems to support the article.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_and_cancer

According to the article, in the USA 3.5% of cancer deaths are caused by alcohol, and worldwide it is 4%. In women the situation is particularly troublesome because for them breast cancer it the top cause of cancer death and 15% of breast cancer deaths were linked to alcohol.

According to wikipedia alcohol is a group 1 carcinogen, and is therefore in the same group as arsenic, asbestos, benzene, plutonium-239, x-rays, and gamma rays.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IARC_Group_1_carcinogens

The article claims that even though moderate alcohol use might reduce heart disease, overall alcohol kills many more people than it saves. When it comes to cancer, there seems to be no safe amount to use.

It is troublesome to me that I had never heard of this before. Could there be a conspiracy by the alcohol industry (which buys plenty of advertisement in the media) to keep this out of public's eye?"

Apple Hides Billions from IRS

Copper Nikus Copper Nikus writes  |  about a year and a half ago

Copper Nikus (1615089) writes "An article at businessinsider claims Apple has slashed its tax bill by paying less than 2 percent on its overseas profits. This was done by legal accounting trickery well beyond my understanding. It is estimated Apple has sheltered up to $94bn from the IRS so far. Now imagine how many cops and teachers could have been hired, how many bridges could have been fixed, and how many pork barrel projects could have been paid for with the normal corporate IRS taxes on that huge amount of money. Is Apple really forced to take advantage of every little legal tax loophole there is, or could they have choosen to do their patriotic duty of paying higher taxes? I think Apple could learn some civic lessons from Starbucks, who has pledged to pay £20m corporate tax in the UK even if it makes no profit."

Chinese Labor Market in Trouble

Copper Nikus Copper Nikus writes  |  about a year and a half ago

Copper Nikus (1615089) writes "The nytimes has an interesting story about the current job market in China. It appears the chinese have stolen too many factory jobs from the USA and are now suffering the consequences. There is a great shortage of factory workers along with a large oversupply of college graduate yougsters that absolutely hate factory work and manual labor in general. Many of the college educated slackers are willing to take scarce non-factory jobs even if they pay only a fraction of what factories pay. When it comes to fresh computer science graduates in particular, the wage at top companies has dropped from $725 a month to $550 a month over the last decade due to oversupply. That is less than what many low skill factory jobs pay. As you might have suspected, a big part of the problem are parents and grandparents willing to subsidize the lazy college educated yougsters. There is also interesting data about cost of living over there, such as internet service for $8 a month, etc."

Raspberry Pi versus Android Mini PC, Fight!

Copper Nikus Copper Nikus writes  |  about 2 years ago

Copper Nikus (1615089) writes "The price of Android Mini PCs have recently dropped to the point they are starting to make the Raspberry Pi look overpriced. This article compares the Raspberry Pi model B against the similarly priced MK802 II single core Android mini PC. IMO it can be argued that the mini PC wins that fight. It's worth noting that several new quad core chinese ARM SoCs have been recently released to the world, and it can be expected to see Android Mini PCs start using them in the very near future. This should translate into even lower prices for the now "obsolete" generations of single and dual core Andoid mini PCs out there."
