Bidding At FCC TV Spectrum Auction May Be Restricted For Large Carriers

Cryacin Re:Government picking favorites (91 comments)

By far the greatest reason why TV channels are so tasty to cellular phone and data providers, is that they generally are lower frequency in spectrum. Why is this good? If you have a portable TV and a cell phone, you'll find that you'll still get TV signal when you don't have cellular signal. They are lower frequency, and thus penetrate further into places like carparks, concrete structures et al.

That's why in Australia, carriers like Telstra beat the pants off other carriers like the Optus network, because their plans work in more carparks, buildings and those lovely artsy fortified bunker's that you get around the place.

This 1981 BYTE Magazine Cover Explains Why We're So Bad At Tech Predictions

Cryacin Re:It was a "joke" back then (275 comments)

This reminds me of Isaac Asimov's Elevator Fallacy. If we imagine ourselves back in the 1800's when buildings were no taller than 10 stories, and then talk about how towering behemoth buildings stretching 100 stories high exist, a science fiction writer would talk about how there would be sky lobbies so that meetings can be held along the way up the building, and that at the end of the day, to avoid the long trek back down the endless stair case, a slide would allow those at the top of the building to travel all the way down in a matter of minutes.

That, or the elevator would be invented.

It's exactly these unforseen technological changes that make us laugh at the predictions from earlier, as the pain points back then are completely irrelevant and solved today, only to have new ones exposed that were never even thought of. Who would have considered it abnormal back in the 80's to need to add and remove media constantly from their system, but would even have thought of software needing to be efficient because of power consumption?

Online Skim Reading Is Taking Over the Human Brain

Cryacin Re:Its called evolution.. (224 comments)

You may laugh, but I won't read novels by authors like Cormack McCarthy on anything but my kindle. Why? Because if there's a word I don't know, I push on it for a bit, and get the dictionary definition. Nothing has aggrandised my lexical ability as this humble feature.

Anti smoking ad links child sex to cigarettes

Cryacin Cryacin writes  |  more than 4 years ago

Cryacin (657549) writes "Will somebody think of the children!?

Deliberately shocking anti-smoking adverts that compare nicotine addiction to sexual abuse, and which the French government has vowed to ban, has sparked a lively debate.

The ads show a man pushing a kneeling child's face towards his crotch. Two feature boys and one a girl. The children look fearfully up at him, holding in their mouth a cigarette that appears to protrude from his fly.

Under the image runs the slogan: "Smoking makes you a slave to tobacco.""

Unique ID number to track school kids in Australia

Cryacin Cryacin writes  |  more than 4 years ago

Cryacin (657549) writes "Proudly brought to you directly from 1984, it seems that the Australian government has found another way to attempt to get people used to being tagged.

Each school child in Australia will get an identity number via a program designed to track their progress throughout their school career, the federal government is expected to announce as early as today.

The "unique identity number" will be attached to the My School program, which publishes the performance of individual schools on the internet, Fairfax Media reports.

The number will allow parents and other concerned parties to access a database documenting a child's performance during the course of their school years, regardless of how many schools they attend and whether they move interstate. (Or change their name, address, phone number, hair colour or anything else to preserve anonymity).

The move is expected to cause controversy and raise privacy provisions, a "senior source" told The Sydney Morning Herald.

Protections would be built in to stop third parties being able to identify students. Hmmm... where have we heard this before?!? http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/minister-a--monkey-could-have-hacked--secret-transport-site-20100223-p085.html"
