Hair-Raising Technique Detects Drugs, Explosives On Human Body

Crypto Gnome Re:As a protest to the use of these devices, (162 comments)

I suggest that everyone who has to go through the scanner reach down into their pants and stick their finger into their butt hole just before they have to point their finger at the detector.

Why do it yourself, when it only takes a *little* encouragement before THE TSA offers to insert THEIR finger in your butthole?

Keeping in mind that THE TSA will not stop until their knuckles are knocking your uvula, or further press-the-digit-ation is blocked at their shoulder (whichever comes last).

Robert McMillen: What Everyone Gets Wrong In the Debate Over Net Neutrality

Crypto Gnome Robert McMillen is an idiot (270 comments)

Netflix happily provides servers to cache their content, for FREE. This solves the congestion issue which Comcast CLAIMS is the reason why Netflix had to cough up literally millions of dollars.

However Comcast REFUSED to deploy those FREE SERVERS.

Anyone who argues that is NOT extortion is an idiot.

Anyone who IGNORES the "refusal to deploy free servers" issue is an idiot.

Robert McMillen: What Everyone Gets Wrong In the Debate Over Net Neutrality

Crypto Gnome Re:Strawman (270 comments)

the argument IS a strawman.

Because NetFLIX will HAPPILY ship a bunch of servers for you to host ON YOUR NETWORK which cache the content, thereby BYPASSING ALL YOUR 'peering costs'.

Comcast (and friends) REFUSE to let Netflix GIVE THEM THESE SERVERS, because by refusing the servers they can FORCE NETFLIX TO PAY MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.

By definition, that's EXTORTION.

Scientists Successfully Grow Full Head of Hair On Bald Man

Crypto Gnome No News Here (of the day) (109 comments)

Surprisingly enough they found that a patient suffering from a side-effect of an autoimmune disorder treated with a drug for treating an (other) autoimmune disorder was successful in reducing-aka-curing the side-effect.

PLUS ONE for "the scientific method", MINUS ONE THOUSAND for thinking this is in ANY way "totally amazing duude!".

BTW: you CANNOT "cure" baldness, baldness is not a disease, it's a description of a symptom.

Fasting Triggers Stem Cell Regeneration of Damaged, Old Immune System

Crypto Gnome For All The Doubters: Watch The Documentary (148 comments)

To anyone who thinks this research has triggered their "bullshit detector" I say "you are so full of bullshit your detector is broken".

Watch this BBC/Horizon documentary http://vimeo.com/54089463

In this video they take before/after blood samples and show at least SOME actual physiological changes, change of things in ways which we currently consider to be "good for your health".

There really (no, really really) DOES appear to be at least some valid science behind this.

Daniel Ellsberg: Snowden Would Not Get a Fair Trial – and Kerry Is Wrong

Crypto Gnome Re:The penalty for treason (519 comments)

How, exactly, do Snowden's actions in leaking information to the media of a staunchly allied country fit the definition of treason?

The argument is that because he revealed details about foreign operations he "aided the enemy" (insert extremely rubbery definition of 'aid').

In the same way that far too many crimes are IMMEDIATELY proclaimed TERRORISM (for the sole reason that they have harsher penalties and lower requirements for proof, due diligence, etc)

Daniel Ellsberg: Snowden Would Not Get a Fair Trial – and Kerry Is Wrong

Crypto Gnome Re: Traitor (519 comments)

So technically the definition of treason encompasses ANY whistleblower about ANY National Security issues.

Again we see overbroad and unnecessary interpretations of The Law which serve NO PURPOSE other than to silence dissent.

Sure we have oversight, and if you come forward raising your concerns we'll ignore you (and destroy your career) and if you go public in ANY way we'll accuse you of treason and destroy your entire life.

The Singularity Is Sci-Fi's Faith-Based Initiative

Crypto Gnome What Is the Singularity (339 comments)

The core concept of The (digital) Singularity is the same as in physics.

That there will probably be some point where technology escalates at a geometric rate and passes "an event horizon" of some kind.

Typically the concept is based around either artificial or uploaded-humans type intelligence running on faster processors (or perhaps more nodes/cores) than meatspace humanity.

Once that happens, and of course assuming that said "thinkers" have the ability to upgrade/rewrite/improve their self (either software or hardware) , then theoretically we should get some kind of "runaway intelligence upgrade" (same thing as gravity escalating to the point where NOTHING can escape, not even light).

This is NOT FAITH, this is basic logic (if A and B then C).

If we never A, or we never let them B, then C won't happen.

Who Helped Kill Patent Troll Reform In the Senate

Crypto Gnome Re:Supporters of the plan accuse... (157 comments)

You, sir, are a complete IDIOT!,

The money that universities make off their patents doesn't go into the pockets of some mysterious investor but BACK INTO FUNDING THE UNIVERSITY.

As a direct result of being able to profit from their patented research universities can afford to do more (or more expensive) research without having to dip into TAX DOLLARS to do so.

Sony Tape Storage Breakthrough Could Bring Us 185 TB Cartridges

Crypto Gnome Yes, but .... (208 comments)

185TB on a cartridge is impressive .. BUT

Does it generate XRAYS when you peel the tape off the spool?

And can you tape your children to the ceiling with it? (or make a boat, or even an airplane?)

Or do you believe that the mentality of Suicide Bombers does not apply in this situation?

Navy Debuts New Railgun That Launches Shells at Mach 7

Crypto Gnome Re:Difficult to defend against (630 comments)

It doesn't seem there would be any good defense against this.

The only conceptual defence against such a weapon would have to be some kind of force-field.

Especially when you consider this is a Generation One product.

Scaling the system up in terms of Projectile Speed, Cycle Times, etc would only be a matter of engineering.

Meat Makes Our Planet Thirsty

Crypto Gnome Re:Yes, of course! (545 comments)

We just pour water into cattle and nothing wet ever comes out. Instead, all the water is converted directly into meat.

Bullshit!

Seriously, bull (or cow) shit is not dry and dusty when it's fresh.

20 Freescale Semiconductor Employees On Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight

Crypto Gnome Re:Stolen passports? (190 comments)

That sounds rather farfetched. Terrorists blowing up a Malaysian plane traveling to China because the US and/or Israel are killing Iranian scientists? Seriously? In case you haven't heard, China has been having a bit of a terrorism problem of its own lately, which makes a lot more sense.

Given the current political climate, I'd be more inclined to believe something along the lines of:

US Governmental Secret Agencies Destroy Malaysian Flight attempting to show that NOWHERE IN THE WORLD is safe from Terrorist Homosexual Paedophile Cannabis-users who hoard Files Released by Snowden.

Japanese Firm Proposes Microwave-Linked Solar Plant On the Moon

Crypto Gnome One Day This Will Be Done (330 comments)

Whether it's specifically THIS project, or another.

Whether it's The Japanese or someone else.

The incentive to achieve this is too unavoidable.

Why? (I hear you ask)

Because the distinction between a targetable multi-terawatt laser and an eco-friendly solar-power downlink is mythical (legal, at best).
So Japan can bypass (simultaneously, no less) their own constitutional ban on militarisation AND the internal treaty against "space weapons".

Ask Slashdot: Beyond Climate-Change or Who Is Looking At The Big Picture?

Crypto Gnome Crypto Gnome writes  |  more than 2 years ago

Crypto Gnome (651401) writes "While everyone is whining about GreenHouse Gasses the actual problem is an excess of heat. Constant bitching about cee owe too and cowfarts is just talking up (presumed/apparent) Causes. Ever since our good friend Einstein proved that e=mcc we've known that matter is essentially fossilised energy. (to put it in a similar descriptive paradigm) So once we get fusion based power plants we'll be releasing into our biosphere excess energy which was previously locked up nicely in matter. Bugger the greenhouse gasses as an intermediary we've gone DIRECTLY from root-cause to OH ZOD WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE. What are we gonna do then? Of course the problem is even WORSE once we crack the problem of Zero Point Energy, now we're sucking energy into The UNIVERSE which effectively didn't exist at all. And it's the same problem if we ever work out how to suck energy out of "neighbouring universes" (yes people say I read too much SF)..... Or maybe they're the same problem and Zero Point is actually just the effect we see of energy cycling between adjacent universes and statistically there's no *net change* until we started fudging with things and trying to keep it on our side of the fence."

Some is better than none, right?

Crypto Gnome Crypto Gnome writes  |  more than 6 years ago So just for the sake of having something in my journal, "because it was there", or something ....

Aside from randomly posting on our favorite rant-space, I am also into photography on a thoroughly-amateur scale.

Digital, naturellement!

My Gear includes

  • Canon 20D & Canon 40D
  • 10-22mm f/(something)
  • 50mm f/1.4
  • 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
  • 28-135mm f/3.5-4.5 IS USM
  • 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
  • misc items (580ex Flash, 1.4x and 2.0x TC, etc)

All of which is hand-craft-ingly post-processed on a MACPRO 3.0GHz with 8GB RAM and 2TB storage using Aperture.

Feel free to wander around to my personal photosite (much love to Gallery2)

Your welcome to dis my photography skills, but please don't just dis the site itself, like all newborns it has much growth ahead.
