Cyanogen Mod Raises $23 Million Funding All Set To Become Major Android Player

CryptoJones What about contributers? (133 comments)

What do people that have contributed to the code base get? Who is getting money for this? I don't understand how you can go from an opensource project to a for-profit project.

DIY Space Suit Testing

CryptoJones Perspective (37 comments)

What they are doing is fairly difficult, and I just want to put what they are doing into perspective. What they are doing is akin to building an mercury program from scratch in a garage. These guys are both brilliant and passionate about this endeavor, so I expect to seem them succeed in the near future. CJ

Bradley Manning Wants To Live As a Woman

CryptoJones Trans-What?? (784 comments)

I am totally for gay rights. If two dudes wanna bang, and they are both consenting, more power to them. But transgender people are just fucking nuts. You want to be a girl and you turned out to be a guy? Too fucking bad. I wish I was born rich instead of good looking. But them the breaks.

How Did You Learn How To Program?

CryptoJones Telemate Scripting Language (623 comments)

When I was a teenager the "In" thing was MajorMudd, a BBS Door Game. Using the Telemate Terminal Software's Scripting language my friend wrote a script to walk me around while I was in middle school and level my character. Reading through the code is what inspired awe and the curiosity to get into program. Now I mainly write C# on Windows Systems and occasionally Python scripts in Linux. Ah how times have changed.

US Senate Passes Internet Tax Bill 69 To 27

CryptoJones Re:bollocks (678 comments)

Well if I understand it correctly, this will actually lead to less revenue for the U.S. Government. They are not instituting a federal Internet sales tax--they are forcing merchants to collect sales tax that is due to the individual state in which the purchaser resides. Aside from the problems this will cause for smaller businesses on the Internet, this will increase the Federal deduction that individuals can claim due to payment of state taxes. Higher federal deductions == less money for the feds (though almost certainly more for the individual states.)

Hey you! Don't you use that logic stuff here! On Slashdot, we don't take kindly to people who use logic.

Unemployed Chinese Graduates Say No Thanks To Factory Jobs

CryptoJones I work in a Factory (366 comments)

I work in the IT Department at a huge factory. My pay is above average for this area, I have freedom to do side projects and keep the rights to my code. I get to talk with interesting people from all walks of life and its much more interesting than the consultancy I was working at before this. Having to work on writing queries that involve the payroll databases I know how much most people make, and most of the blue-collar managers and shift leaders make more than I do. My point in all this is factory work shouldn't have a negative connotation. I love my job and the people I work with.

Ask Slashdot: CS Degree While Working Full Time?

CryptoJones Re:University of Maryland, University College (433 comments)

I'm getting my CS degree from them right now, while working full-time. It's not great for learning, but if you already know how to program, you can definitely check the box there (and probably get a 4.0 to boot).

I disagree about the learning. I have had some great professors, and while almost all are adjunct, the bad ones were few and far between.

Ask Slashdot: CS Degree While Working Full Time?

CryptoJones UMUC (433 comments)

While it is a little pricey, UMUC (which started out as the distance education branch of UM College Park) has some good teachers and a great Computer and Information Science Program. Comparing notes with the local "State College" the classes are harder and regardless of an percieved online stigma, I am proud of my education. Full Disclaimer, I still have 8 classes to go until graduation. CJ

Lockheed, SpaceX Trade Barbs

CryptoJones Re:Oldspace got fat and lazy (215 comments)

Oh yeah. Pre-pregs are pretty much standard. So much in fact that that Hexcel can't make it fast enough. The only thing I have seen hand-impregnated are fiberglass cloth for some legacy parts.

Even using prepregs in climate-controlled layup rooms with the exact same mold with the same CTE, parts will vary significantly.

+1 for this. When I worked at JSC, Sen. KBH (Named removed) was on the VIP list for NASA. How many European vacations did we give her? The answer may never be known.

CryptoJones Re:Oldspace got fat and lazy (215 comments)

Composites are a bad example. There is too much variation in the resin/curing process and the inane tolerances are imported from metal manufacturing years.
