Netflix Pondering Peer-to-Peer Technology For Streaming Video

DJ Particle Re:Oh! (114 comments)

------
The tech is speaking with the voice of inexperience. If he says you're "guaranteed 12M down and 3M up" those are the thresholds Comcast has set for "acceptable" service on your package, which I assume is advertised higher than that. If you're below those thresholds they will begin their normal troubleshooting/field tech process.

Yes, I've known for some time that's the case.

Netflix Pondering Peer-to-Peer Technology For Streaming Video

DJ Particle Re:Oh! (114 comments)

Actually, Comcast tech support has told me point blank that I'm guaranteed at least 12M down and 3M up. Actual speeds right now are about 18M down and 4M up.

Retired SCOTUS Justice Wants To 'Fix' the Second Amendment

DJ Particle The Founders themselves said: (1633 comments)

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." Thomas Jefferson, proposed Virginia constitution, June 1776. Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334 (C. J. Boyd, Ed., 1950)

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." Thomas Jefferson, quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria in "On Crimes and Punishment", 1764, pp 87-88.

"The Constitution shall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms." Samuel Adams, During the Massachusetts U.S. Constitution ratification convention, 1788

"Arms in the hands of citizens may be used at the individual discretion, in private self-defense." John Adams, A Defense of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America, 1787-88

"I ask sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them." George Mason, during Virginia's ratification convention, June 4, 1788 (From J. Elliott, Debates in the General State Conventions 425 (3rd ed. 1937).

"The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. A well regulated militia, composed of the body of people, trained in arms, is the best and most natural defense of a free country." James Madison, I Annuals of Congress 434 (June 8, 1789)

That was almost word for word the phrasing of the 2nd Amendment, which makes our 4th President essentially the author of said amendment. But he also had this further to say in "The Federalist", in which he DEFINES what it means:

"The Constitution preserves the advantage of being armed which Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation where the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms." James Madison, The Federalist No. 46

That last one was straight from the author of the amendment himself....

How Cochlear Implants Are Being Blamed For Killing Deaf Culture

DJ Particle I once had a deaf girlfriend.... (510 comments)

She hated the, as she described, "Capital-D" Deaf Community. At a young age, she was taught so well that people tended to not notice her deafness (including myself on occasion), and she describes how other would call her a "sellout" and a "traitor" for learning a "hearing language". She just simply considers herself bilingual (English and ASL).

Oh, and despite near-total deafness since birth, she could sing... on tune! Karaoke was one of her favorite activities.

She did try to give herself hearing. She once tried a pair of hearing aids that could allow her to very faintly hear sounds, but since all she knew in life was deafness, she couldn't process anything besides 'white noise'. She considered it a failed experiment, but at least she tried it. :)

Wait... seeing a blacklight glow bright purple isn't normal?? O.o

I'm not joking, either... I thought that was normal O.o

Granted, I don't see it quite as bright as the bottom photo, but I see it a lot brighter than the top photo.

FCC Orders Comcast To Stop Labeling Equipment Rental a Service Fee

DJ Particle Re:A simple solution (97 comments)

The sport agencies' subscriptions will log your IP though, and if you're in the area where the game is taking place, they will block you to make you watch it on TV. Those services will only work for you full time if you use a VPN.

Blizzard To Sell Level 90 WoW Characters For $60

DJ Particle Re:Wut? (253 comments)

To be fair, apparently there are these caveats:

1) Once your character is boosted, you'll be thrown into a scenario chain to teach you the higher abilities. You need to pass it to go back into the world.
2) There's still incentive to get your character to 60 first. If you raise a 60+ character to 90, your professions also auto-boost to 600.
3) By the time you can buy this, the level cap will be 100. There's still some leveling to do.

Ask Slashdot: Are AdBlock's Days Numbered?

DJ Particle Re:Stop infecting me.. (731 comments)

"When it comes to sites that are proactive and actually have an approval process for ads and wrap them up in their own delivery system to avoid spreading malware to their customers, I let the ads through."

Even then, there's no 100% guarantee. Yahoo Ads just last week had an issue with malware-laden ads.

Ask Slashdot: Are AdBlock's Days Numbered?

DJ Particle Re:NoScript (731 comments)

And even ads supplied by Yahoo and Google aren't immune. Those are the two most reputable ad suppliers, and both have been known to occasionally shove out malware-laden ads. Until I can get a 100% guarantee against ad-based malware, AdBlock+ stays running.

Atlanta Man Shatters Coast-to-Coast Driving Record, Averaging 98MPH

DJ Particle Re:When will he be arrested? (666 comments)

The reverse is true too. There was a (locally) famous case in Boston about 15 years back where 2 motorists on I-93 were stopped for "endangerment". They were doing the 55 speed limit when prevailing traffic was about 15-20mph higher. They appealed their tickets and lost.

And for the record, at least in MA, "endangerment" is a more serious offense than "speeding".

Blizzard Wins Legal Battle Against WoW Bot Company

DJ Particle Re: forbidden from transferring or open-sourcing? (285 comments)

True...but in all likelyhood it won't be the company releasing their code. My guess is one of their more savvy customers will reverse-engineer it and release the code he/she discovered.
