Ask Slashdot: Finding a Job After Completing Computer Science Ph.D?

Daniel Oom Re:Why? (379 comments)

If you have a Ph.D., you hopefully choice your research with care. If it is a theoretical topic, you should seek employment in academia or military. If it has practical applications, you should apply with a company that needs the fruits of your research or start your own company. You are convincing them to invest in your area of research: quite different from a MS in CS who looks for a menial job as a software engineer.

It's Banned Books Week; I recommend ...

Daniel Oom Banned books? What banned books? (151 comments)

Mein Kampf is the only book that is not available in this country since the (national and Bavarian) government owns the copyright and refuses to print it. That copyright will expire next year.

Is It Time To Split Linux Distros In Two?

Daniel Oom Leave it up to the distribution (282 comments)

It is really a commercial question of where a distribution should focus its development efforts and where it can get revenues. Windows NT is a kernel too, but the desktop and server packages command quite different prices and embedded Operating Systems usually don't command a fee per device sold, just a flat fee for the manufacturer.

Microsoft Dumps 1,500 Apps From Its Windows Store

Daniel Oom Whatever happened to Free Trade? (126 comments)

Quality Control may sound like a good idea....and Microsoft should apply it to their own products or maybe even their own app store, but allow competitor's software to run on their wares.

Wiring Programmers To Prevent Buggy Code

Daniel Oom Not as novel as it sounds (116 comments)

The procedure is just a variant of letting the programmer write a piece of code and then hook him/her up to a polygraph and interrogate her/him if the code has any bugs, and if it does, in which source file and line number....

Well, you have a choice of vi and emacs on Unix, with pico being for beginners. There are other editors, and learning their names is a good way to train your memory.

Ask Slashdot: Is Running Mission-Critical Servers Without a Firewall Common?

Daniel Oom What is the point of a firewall? (348 comments)

Take a good look at your exposed host. Install only the software that the clients will need and make sure only the essential ports have services listening on them.

Now there is no traffic left for your firewall to filter (except connections to your internal network going through a different interface).

Math, Programming, and Language Learning

Daniel Oom Re: Why would I need to understand algorithms? (241 comments)

Not everybody needs to understand computers. Almost nobody needs to 'use' a computer.

Some arts colleges have courses where you can study 'User eXperience Design'. No computing required - just bring some crayons and paper and study old paintings for inspiration.

Math, Programming, and Language Learning

Daniel Oom It's actually the other way around. (241 comments)

A more fruitful question to ask is how many classes in informatics subjects a mathematics student should take to warrant a degree in Computer Science (instead of general or applied mathematics).

Informatics consists mostly of GÃdel's incompleteness theorem and Turings halting problem with a bit of propositional logic and lamda calculus thrown in; the rest of computer science is really electronics. A few experiments in electronics and programming may help students to visualise the theory a bit.
