Yahoo Is Going To Stop Email Service In China

Das Auge A sensible move (70 comments)

You can't have it both way. We're (Americans) are constantly told that we shouldn't push our laws on other countries. That's correct, we should not. We should follow the laws of the land that we're operating in. This can result in following laws that would be looked down on, or even illegal, in our own country. Yahoo! tried to follow the laws of the land it was operating in and got burned for its efforts, and now it's pulling out.

You can't have it both way ways. Either you push your laws on another country or you follow the other country's laws. You can't pick and choose. The only other alternative is to leave. Yahoo! makes far more money in the US than in China, so it can't keep drawing bad publicity. They left. A sensible move.

New Revenue Model For Low Budget Films: Lawsuits

I stopped reading TFA years ago. I got tired of one site after another chopping up (maybe) one page worth of writing and spreading it across ad-filled pages.

Valve Starts Promoting Steam For Linux To Windows Users

Das Auge Team? (474 comments)

"team is now being used by thousands of gamers running a Linux OS"

Really? Slashdot has a history of doing a lackluster job of editing, but come on. "Team"?

On topic: I'm looking forward to gaming on Linux. I don't care if it's a byproduct of Valve's development of their own console. In much the same way that I looked forward to having a motherboard with no IDE connectors, I can't wait to ditch Windows. The only reason that I keep it around is for gaming. No more wasted space having to format a large part of my drive in NTFS and the other in EXT4.

Bravo, Valve. Bravo!

Why Girls Do Better At School

Das Auge Academic (690 comments)

Your post touches on the academics of the subject, but not the real-world nature of it.

The concept of prejudice has all but been eradicated in the real-world. Fact: whites are more likely to be a victim of a black person than a white person. Prejudice would lead me to be more wary of blacks, but that would be labeled racist in today's politically-correct climate. Fact: overall, men are much stronger than women. Prejudice would lead me to ask a man for help instead of a woman, but that would be labeled sexist.

So yeah, keep telling me how something is defined in a book...

Why Girls Do Better At School

Das Auge What are you smoking? (690 comments)

So whites can't be the victims of racism? Males can't be the victims of sexism? You're seriously saying that?

You're the typical feminist. You whine about how there aren't enough woman lawyers, CEOs, and other white-collar, high paying jobs; but you're not out there picketing because they're aren't enough woman miners, crab boat fishers, and oil rig workers because those are physically hard and aren't glamorous.

What you want isn't equality, you want superiority.

Why Girls Do Better At School

Das Auge Sexist? (690 comments)

If the genders were reversed on this topic, it would have been labeled as sexist. But since it's the guys on the short end of the study, it's okay.

Maybe I should start support groups, activist organizations, and demand equality?

Shut Up and Play Nice: How the Western World Is Limiting Free Speech

Das Auge How Many? (1160 comments)

And how many times did the free speech laws work as they're supposed to? Especially when compared to how many times they were challenged?

What? If it's not 100% perfect it's horribly broken? Hate to ruin your world view, but no system that involves people is perfect.

Shut Up and Play Nice: How the Western World Is Limiting Free Speech

Das Auge Lazy (1160 comments)

Did you even read up on of the stuff you posted?

You did not. All but the last one were overturned, and many of the victims were awarded money. The last link was for protesters, who weren't arrested for speaking poorly about Bush, but for breaking the laws regarding the actions that protesters can take.

Freedom of speech is still working in the USA.

China Slowing Nuclear Buildout In Response To Fukushima

Das Auge Why? (109 comments)

Are they building their new nuclear reactors with 50 year old technology on fault lines next to an ocean with an insufficient battery back up? That would be the only reason a sensible person would look at the Fukushima and decide not to build a nuclear power plant.

Targeted TV Ads: Silver Bullet Or Privacy Nightmare?

Das Auge Re:Adblocking and Neflix (96 comments)

That is a possiblity, but I'm working with understanding that the personality of the adult is formed, and cemeted, in the youth. If they're not indoctrinated in their youth, they may not be compelled to buy, buy, buy as adults. Once it's cemented, it's incredibly difficult to change.

Besides, as I also mentioned, I'm not a neglectful parent. I explain a great many things to them. Including the tricks of advertising (know thy enemy). I also teach by example. I don't buy all the latest, greatest things. Teaching by example just may be the greatest way to teach.

Targeted TV Ads: Silver Bullet Or Privacy Nightmare?

Das Auge Adblocking and Neflix (96 comments)

You can't -- yet -- adblock television, but Neflix works for now.

December, two years ago, I ditched broadcast TV in favor of Netflix and what I could find online (mostly Hulu). A couple of months later, I caught my young children watching this cool new show they just found on Netflix: Voltron. It brought back memories, so I say down and watched it with them. At one point, the screen darkened. It's the spot where a commercial could've gone, but the video just faded back in and picked up where there story left off. It hit me, there aren't any ads in Netflix shows.

Over the next several months I realized that my children asked less often for toys and other consumer items. Now, a year and a half after switching Netflix, my children only ask for stuff less than a quarter of what they used to do. And what they do ask for are stuff like video games, slingshots, and skateboards.

I realized that cutting them off from the constant bombardment of "Buy! Buy! Buy!" of commercials -- that use psychological tricks -- has short circuited their indoctrination into the cult of consumerism.

Taking commercials out of their lives in one of the best things I've ever done for them (in additional to attentive parenting). I recommend you other parents do the same.

Torrent Site Seized by US Government

Das Auge Das Auge writes  |  about 4 years ago

Das Auge (597142) writes "Without waiting for the COICA legislation to pass, the US government has seized, apparently without prior warning, the torrent site onsmash.com. This action was a part of group of seizures whose focus appears to be mostly on counterfeit goods. ICE has confirmed the reports, “ICE office of Homeland Security Investigations executed court-ordered seizure warrants against a number of domain names. As this is an ongoing investigation, there are no additional details available at this time.”

I surmise that this is an attempt to lump copyright infringement with the actual theft of counterfeit products."
